Misbah-ul-Haq to miss Hamilton Test

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq will miss the second Test in Hamilton, as he returns to Pakistan following the death of his father-in-law. Batsman Azhar Ali will lead the side in Misbah' absence, the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced.

Misbah and his family, who were also in Christchurch, had received news of his father-in-law being admitted to intensive care early on Sunday morning. They will make the trip back to Pakistan together. Misbah had only briefly taken the field during New Zealand's chase, and is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday evening.

His departure is a significant blow to Pakistan. Apart from having led the team in 50 Tests, Misbah has been a middle-order rock, never averaging less than 40 across the six most recent calendar years.

"Misbah's been exceptional throughout the years and we'll miss him definitely," Azhar said following the loss in the first Test at Hagley Oval. "We have to cope with that now and whoever comes into the side will take that opportunity and give us runs, as well as the stability he gives us in the middle."

No replacement has yet been named to the squad, but Misbah's place in the XI is likely to be filled by either Mohammad Rizwan or Sharjeel Khan, who are the extra batsmen with the squad in New Zealand.

Misbah had previously missed only one Test since he was appointed captain in 2010: he was unavailable for a 2012 Test in Galle, due to a suspension for slow over-rates. He had made scores of 31 and 13 in the Christchurch Test.

Santner returns to NZ squad; Taylor in doubt

Ross Taylor's availability for the second and final Test against Pakistan in Hamilton remains to be confirmed as Dean Brownlie came in as cover for him, while Mitchell Santner replaced Jimmy Neesham in New Zealand's 15-man squad.

Taylor will consult a specialist regarding a growth in his left eye, which might be affecting his batting and fielding, felt head coach Mike Hesson.

All-rounder Santner, who was out with a wrist injury three weeks ago, makes his way back after a successful tour of India. In New Zealand's 3-0 Test series defeat to India, Santner was their joint-highest wicket-taker with Trent Boult with 10 wickets, while being the side's most economical bowler in the One-Day Internationals.

"It's obviously pleasing to have Mitchell back with the team ahead of the second Test," Gavin Larsen, the national selector, said on Monday (November 21). "With him and Todd (Astle) in the team, it gives us the opportunity to play two spinners if required. Mitchell brings all-round ability and is coming off a strong tour of India.

"We're still waiting on a little more information on Ross before we make any decision on his availability for the second Test. Dean will come in as cover, but we should know more in the next couple of days."

Neesham will join the Otago squad for the next round of the Plunkett Shield matches after being left out in in favour of Colin de Grandhomme, who returned 7 for 64, for the first Test.

New Zealand lead the two-match series 1-0 after an eight-wicket win in Christchurch. The second Test will begin on Friday (November 25) in Hamilton.

Boult to miss second Test due to knee injury

Trent Boult, New Zealand pace bowler, has been ruled out of New Zealand's second Test against Pakistan in Hamilton after complaining of discomfort in the right knee during training.
Boult is thought to have aggravated the knee injury while fielding in the opening Test, one that the hosts won by eight wickets. However, he had been suffering from discomfort for several weeks, confirmed New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.

All-rounder Doug Bracewell has joined the squad in Hamilton, with the second Test due to begin on Friday.

"Trent has had a minor discomfort in his knee dating back to the tour of India, which we've been managing in recent weeks," Hesson said in a statement on Thursday (November 24).

"Unfortunately, he irritated it further while fielding in the first Test. He bowled again and we were optimistic he would be ready for Hamilton, but during training on Wednesday felt further pain and has subsequently been ruled out of the test."

Boult could still make a recovery in time to be part of the One-Day International series against Australia next month.
