From a business point of view, renting only makes sense if it is exclusively for rent for a substantial period of time, like 3-6 months. But here we know that all new Indian movies Prime Video puts on rent will be available on Prime after 2 weeks. This is why Hollywood movies are successful in renting. No way you will get a Hollywood movie released on rent after 2 weeks on any subscription platform. Anyone who wants to legally watch a Hollywood movie within 3 months of release only has rent option. No idea dude.
For foreign movies it makes sense. One platform owns the streaming rights, and the remaining can have it on VOD basis. That have been the case since the beginning.
But for Indian movies, they themselves hold the streaming rights as well. So I don't understand what's the point. I doubt they are earning as much as they are getting trashed on Social Media due to this.
On top of this, they are losing viewers that are already subscribed to their platform. Because once it's out on Rent, within few minutes it will be available everywhere illegally. So people who are already subscribed to their platform will feel betrayed. Because the once that don't have their subscription are already getting to watch it before them. While the person who is already a subscriber has to wait for it to become free. Some of them might decide to watch it illegally as well. Hence, Prime Video losing streams from their own subscribers.
The sole reason most people subscribe to Prime is to watch latest Indian movies, not Originals or English movies. By putting them on rent before prime, they are cannibalizing the Prime service.
