Starc likely to miss start of IPL 2015
prv_9121c_1427860815.jpg

Australian fast bowler and man of the series
in the recently-concluded ICC Cricket World
Cup, Mitchell Starc, is likely to miss the start
of Indian Premier League (IPL) season after
suffering a minor injury to his knee. Starc,
who was sold to the Royal Challengers
Bangalore (RCB) in last year's IPL auction,
was advised two weeks of rest making him
unavailable for the opening stages of the
tournament.

"Mitchell (Starc) had some knee soreness
during the latter stages of the World Cup,"
Alex Kountouris, Australian team physio,
said, "He will have a short period off to rest
and recover, before being reassessed by CA
medical staff. We estimate his recovery time
will be between two-three weeks."

Starc, who captured 22 wickets at an
incredible average of 10.18 in the World
Cup, has been widely touted to lead a
misfiring RCB bowling attack and help
improve the team's indifferent performances
of recent seasons. Starc's injury compounds
RCB's bowling woes - they've also had
another of their pace bowling acquisitions,
Adam Milne, sidelined due to a heel injury
suffered during the World Cup. In Starc's
absence, fellow Sydney Sixers seamer Sean
Abbott could make his IPL debut.

With a hectic cricket season ahead for
Australian players that includes tours of
West Indies and the all-important away
Ashes series in July, Cricket Australia are
unlikely to risk rushing their star pacer into
action.

RCB, led by India Test captain Virat Kohli,
will begin their quest for a maiden IPL title
with an away game against the defending
champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, on March.

No bowling coach, Zaheer to take charge for DD
prv_21040_1427890821.jpg

Zaheer Khan bagging Rs 4 crore at a
restructured Delhi Daredevils had people
rubbing their eyes in surprise. With the
possibility of him making an international
comeback fast receding, Zaheer's stock had
come down a few notches. However, DD had
other designs.

Going by the team management, it was
communicated to Zaheer that he was picked to
look after the bowling unit besides chipping in
with the ball. According to sources, he will be
performing the job of 'mentoring' the pacers as
the team no longer has the services of former
India bowling coach and long-time DD coach
Eric Simons. "When he was bought, Zaheer was
clearly told that it's his experience and
knowledge that are valued more. His job is to
guide the seamers and take care of
strategizing. He will be helping the likes of
Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat," a
senior Daredevils official told TOI.

After a disastrous last season with an
overhauled squad, the Daredevils have tried to
ensure that the team think tank connects well
with head coach Gary Kirsten this time - be it
appointing JP Duminy as captain or bringing in
Zaheer. "Gary knows Zaheer very well. Zaheer
was his leading bowler during his stint as India
coach. Gary knows exactly how he can be
used."

Narine to go undergo another bowling test before IPL
prv_ec6a2_1427977853.jpg

Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) ace spinner Sunil
Narine might have been cleared by the ICC but
the West Indian will still have to appear for
another test for his suspected illegal bowling
action in Chennai, BCCI president Jagmohan
Dalmiya said on Wednesday.

"I've spoken to them (KKR management), he
has to appear for the test again. Be it once or
twice," Dalmiya told reporters on the sidelines
of Cricket Association of Bengal's felicitation
programme of the 1989-90 Ranji Trophy
winning squad that celebrated 25 years of the
triumph on Wednesday.

Dalmiya's office confirmed that the test would
be held at the Sri Ramachandra University in
Chennai.

Narine was banned for his suspect action
during the 2014 Champions League Twenty20
and was barred from playing in the final against
Chennai Super Kings that the Knight Riders lost
by eight wickets.

Bharat Arun joins RCB as assistant coach
prv_54d63_1427952625.jpg

Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun has joined
Royal Challengers Bangalore as assistant
coach for the forthcoming season of the IPL.

The former allrounder will be working
alongside head coach Daniel Vettori, batting
and fielding coach Trent Woodhill and
bowling coach Allan Donald. This is Arun's
first IPL assignment.

"It's a new challenge and I'm looking
forward to it. RCB has been one of the most
consistent teams in the IPL but the winners'
trophy is still eluding them. We have a great
team and it's full of matchwinners like AB de
Villiers, Mitchell Starc, Virat Kohli and Chris
Gayle. I don't see any reason why we can't
win the trophy this time," Arun told TOI on
Wednesday.

Arun, who is known for his ability to work on
the mental aspect of players, stressed that
mental strength makes the difference at the
top. Arun is said to be good with reading
players' mind and then guide them with
appropriate inputs.

"You have to understand that you are not
competing against others in the cricket field.

At the highest level, you only compete with
yourself. There is no doubt about the talent
of players who have reached this level. It's
more about sustaining oneself at the highest
level for a long period for which one has to
be mentally strong.
