Speculation over CSK buyers as IPL slots auction for Feb 16

The authorities of the Indian Premier
League (IPL) have scheduled this
year's auction for February 16 in
Bangalore. No official communication
has been made to the franchises, but
their representatives have been
informally informed to block the
date.

The obvious outcome of the
development is a degree of clarity
over the structure of IPL 8. There
were question marks over Chennai
Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals,
should the Supreme Court-appointed
three-member committee - chaired
by former Chief Justice of India RM
Lodha, and with former Supreme
Court judges Ashok Bhan and RV
Raveendran as members - give a
verdict before start of the league on
April 8.

However, now that the auction date
has been fixed, there appears to be
no immediate danger to these teams.

"That is the inevitable inference.
They have not told us anything about
the players of the two teams. So we
can assume that these two teams will
be taking part in the IPL 8 at least,"
said an official of a franchise.

KP, Yuvraj and Karthik re-enter
auction

Delhi Daredevils, followed by Royal
Challengers Bangalore and Surisers
Hyderanad will be the biggest
spenders this year when the IPL
auctions take place on February 16,
according to media reports. The
Daredevils, who had let go of Kevin
Pietersen and the Indian duo of
Dinesh Karthik and Murali Vijay, will
enter the player auctions with the
biggest purse, but the pool of players
available will only be revealed on
February 4.

Along with Pietersen and Karthik,
Yuvraj Singh, who was released by
Royal Challengers Bangalore after
attracting the highest bid in last
year's auction, will enter this year's
event with a base price of Rs 2 crore,
as will South Africa's Test captain
Hashim Amla.

The Royal Challengers enter the
auctions with the second biggest
purse of Rs 21 crore, helped by the
release of Yuvraj, who was captured
for Rs 14 crore alone. On top of that,
an additional purse of Rs 3 crore will
be available to each franchise over
what they collected from releasing
players.

The Daredevils, who let go of 13
players after finishing at the bottom
of the table in 2014, will intend to
re-jig their entire squad and hope to
recapture some of their released
players at a cheaper cost, as will the
Sunrisers, who have Rs 20.85 crore
after letting go of Aaron Finch,
Darren Sammy and Amit Mishra and
seven other players.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding
the future of the Indian Premier

conducted by Richard Madley, a
professional auctioneer from
England, who has conducted each of

devised new strategies, over the
previous few months. They will have
the opportunity to bid for some of
the biggest names in the game,"
Ranjib Biswal, chairman, IPL
Governing Council was quoted in a
BCCI release.

The news comes in the backdrop of
uncertainty surrounding the future of
teams Chennai Super Kings and
Rajasthan Royals after their owners
were found guilty of illegal practices
by India's Supreme Court on January
22. India's top court in its order
earlier had barred the current ICC
Chairman N Srinivasan from
contesting the BCCI elections as long
as he was the owner of CSK and had
highlighted the issue of conflict of
interest.

An estimated Rs 1,000 crore of
advertising is riding on the
tournament which is scheduled to be held from April 8 to May 24.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have traded
Mandeep Singh from Kings XI Punjab, in what is
the sixth trade prior to the start of the 2015
season of the Pepsi IPL. Mandeep has been
RCB's third signing of the season. They brought
in Iqbal Abdulla and Manvinder Bisla during the
first trade window.

Mandeep has been a consistent performer at
the domestic and junior levels, and in the IPL,
over the years. He scored 432 runs in 16
matches during the 2012 season of the
tournament and was subsequently awarded the
'Emerging Player Award' for his performance in
the 2012 season of the tournament. However,
the emergence of Manan Vohra in the Kings'
lineup reduced Mandeep to just a handful of
appearances in the last couple of season. Prior
to playing for the Kings XI Punjab, Mandeep also
had a brief stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders
in 2010.

The second trading window before the 2015
season of the Pepsi IPL closes on Friday, 6
February 2015. There will be a third trading
window immediately after the 2015 Pepsi IPL
Player Auction, which will take place on Monday,
16 February 2015.
