T20 World Cup is happening this year that too in India. And ipl is the best place where he can get good experience /practice of good competitive t20 matches that too amongst/against best in the world before the t20wc in India
Plus Ricky Ponting Australian bond with Smith also won't allow Smith do that remember he didn't played bbl as well!

I think it's between family & money .. not about Australia or India .. may be price was 14 or 16 crores then situation will be different just oz thinks

Maybe its because he may choose family over the exhausting bio bubble protocol for 3 month that too for such small amount of money. And look to fresh start in WC t20 . It isn't like he is unfamiliar with indian conditions. He didn't play BBL possibly because he was part of all 3 format of India's tour of Australia
