Chrome Will Soon Label Certain HTTP Sites as Not Secure

Google has been encouraging websites to move to the secure HTTPS protocol for quite some time now. Last year, the search giant started giving preference to the HTTPS pages over HTTP and then announced that the Web crawler will start searching for HTTPS versions of HTTP pages. Now, Google has announced that starting with Chrome 56, the browser will provide warning to the users in a more active way about entering sensitive information on non-secure sites.

Till now, Chrome did not explicitly call HTTP pages as non-secure but with Chrome 56, the browser will provide the pages with the label if they require certain private information from the users, the company said in a blog. "Starting in version 56, Chrome will mark HTTP pages that collect passwords or credit cards as non-secure, as part of a long-term plan to mark all HTTP sites as non-secure," it said.

Apart from the warning about non-secure pages, Chrome 56 beta brings along support for Web Bluetooth. The support for Web Bluetooth allows Web developers to connect with Bluetooth devices such as printers or LED displays with just a few lines of JavaScript.

The beta build of Chrome 56 comes along with support for CSS "position: sticky" command that allows the webpage titles to stick to the top of the screen when user scrolls down. This helps users in figuring out what the topic is about.

The features mentioned above are a part of the beta release of Chrome 56, which is already available for download on Android,
Chrome OS, Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Opera 42 for Windows, Mac, Linux Gets Built-in Currency Conversion and More

Internet browser Opera has released a new stable desktop version for all users, and it comes with a few nifty features worth highlighting. The biggest addition in Opera 42 is the built-in currency converter tool that makes it very easy to convert amounts in foreign currency without leaving a tab. The browser is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Traditionally, users head to Google or Xe.com to convert currency and get proper results. However, with Opera 42, a user can just select the currency on a web page (for eg: an international shopping site), and a pop-up will convert it to the default pre-selected currency. This default currency can also be easily changed as per the preference of the user. Opera 42 offers support for conversion of 32 major currencies, and the exchange rates are based on figures from the European Central Bank for accuracy.

This feature comes built-in with Opera 42, and does not require a separate extension installation to work-as is the case in other browsers like Firefox. You can disable the feature by heading to Settings > Browser > User Interface, where you will find a check box next to the On text selection convert currency to option. You can even change the currency conversion option from there. The browser supports INR, USD, EUR, CHF, JPY, GBP, and other currencies.

Apart from the currency converter, the Opera 42 also brings new improvements in startup times, news feed discovery, and push notifications support. The full changelog of the latest version can be seen here. Existing users should get a notification of the new version, and if you haven't already, check for it manually in Menu -> About Opera -> New Versions. Alternatively, the latest version can also be downloaded from the Opera website.

Recently, Opera has been introducing many features including the browser VPN, built-in ad-blocker, and the battery saving feature that makes the browser worth a try.

READY TO BROWSE THE WEB IN VR? GOOGLE CHROME FOR ANDROID GETS WEBVR API

Virtual Reality (VR) is rapidly growing in popularity, and now it's coming to the web. The power of the web is that it can allow VR to work across browsers and hardware, accessible via a single click. This enables VR developers to broadly reach users across multiple types of headsets with a single web app. Here’s how to get started.

Chrome 56 for Android is now available in beta, and web developers can sign up for an Origin Trial which enables the WebVR API and GamePad API extensions. The WebVR API provides access to the input and output capabilities of virtual reality devices such as Daydream View. It also provides access to the user’s position and orientation, so that web apps can render a stereoscopic 3D scene to the headset's display. The Gamepad API extensions provide access to input from motion controllers, such as the Daydream controller, and enables natural interactions in VR.

Microsoft Edge adds more options to control Flash content for a better browsing experience

Microsoft Edge is introducing new features that gives users more control on how to handle Flash content. Microsoft is now further encouraging the transition to a completely HTML5-based web experience. For those sites that support HTML5 only versions, the Edge browser will now default to the HTML5 version. This means that the Flash content of a site will not even be loaded by the browser, thereby improving the performance.

What now happens on Edge if you go to a site that depends on Flash. Image: Microsoft.
For sites that do run Flash content, Edge will prompt users with a choice. They can either choose to run the Flash content or not. The choice will be remembered for subsequent visits to the same website. Microsoft will allow Flash content to run on some of the most popular sites that still use Flash. Microsoft has not publicly disclosed a list of these sites. The number of popular sites still allowed to run Flash content automatically will be reduced over time.

Microsoft hopes that at the end of the process, there will be fewer popular sites depending on Flash based content. The update will be available to Windows Insider users immediately, and will roll out publicly with the Windows 10 Creator’s update in 2017. Microsoft is also encouraging developers to adopt the HTML5 standard, and has indicated that similar updates are coming for Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

After the Windows 10 Anniversary update,
Edge had started to autopause Flash content . Safari has implemented a feature that disables Flash by default. When users navigate to a site with Flash content, Safari prompts the user to activate Flash for that website , for that session, or permanently. Mozilla has gone ahead and blocked Flash till Adobe fixes all the vulnerabilities. Google prioritises HTML5 content over Flash content whenever possible.

Opera Max VIP Mode Offers Unlimited VPN Access With Lock Screen Ads on Charging Screen

The Opera Max data manager app has been updated with a new VIP mode that gives users unlimited VPN use in exchange of ads on the lockscreen while charging. Even though users could use VPN earlier, they had to re-enable it every 12 hours, which could sometimes end up frustrating users.

Even though there is no requirement of re-enabling VPN every 12 hours in VIP mode, in order to keep the app up and running, the ads will show up over users' lockscreen when the phone is on charging. As the ads from Opera Max only show up when the phone is on charging, some users might prefer this setting over the one that requires them to re-enable the VPN in 12 hours.

"We listened to your feedback and understood that some of you want to have an option to continuously use data saving and privacy features without any limits. Opera Max savings and privacy services are free but time limited. As you may know, running a cloud service for all of your app data, and compressing and encrypting it requires a lot of servers," the company said in its blog post.

The company also announced that the monthly active users count for Opera Max has now reached the 50 million mark. Considering that the company is now catering to such a large number of users, this addition can be considered a welcome change and might provide a better alternative to those who were looking for it.

Google Chrome became more popular than Internet Explorer in 2016

For the first time, Google Chrome users exceeded Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, according to a report in Ars Technica. The usage for Google Chrome surged, while the number of users on Internet Explorer tapered off. Microsoft introduced a new browser for Windows 10, Edge. At the start of 2016, only 10 percent of Internet users had Windows 10, a figure that reached 24 percent by the end of the year.

This means that 22 percent of Windows 10 users are opting for an alternative browser to the default Edge browser that comes installed with the operating system. Edge is emerging as a popular browser among Steam users. 50 percent of steam users have upgraded to the latest Windows 10 OS. The tipping point happened in March 2016, where Chrome users exceeded Internet Explorer users.

The report is based on data available at
netmarketshare.com , however according to data released by Shareaholic, the switch happened back in 2013 . Statcounter data also shows a different story, although the general trends are the same. According to the Statcounter data, there were a lot fewer Internet Explorer users as compared to the data at netmarketshare. Firefox is the next most common browser after Google Chrome according to Statcounter, but Internet Explorer remains the second most common browser according to netmarketshare.

In India, Internet Explorer usage is much lower than the worldwide levels. As of December 2016, the adoption of Google Chrome in India stands at 72 per cent, clearly dominating the market share and winning the browser wars. The figure is ten percent higher than the global adoption of Chrome, which is at 62 percent.

Meet Opera Neon, a concept browser that gives you a glimpse into the future of web browsers

Opera today released a new concept browser called for Opera Neon for Windows. It gives you a glimpse into the future of desktop browsers. Opera Neon is built on top of the Blink web rendering engine and it was built from scratch to bring you cool effects and animations without slowing down your experience.

Some new features you won’t have seen in a browser before:

A new start page that uses your desktop wallpaper as its background.

A sidebar with its own video player, image gallery and download manager.

A vertical, visual tab bar on the right side of the browser window that makes it easier to distinguish between tabs.
An intelligent system that automatically manages your tabs. Like gravity, frequently used tabs will float to the top, while less important tabs will sink to the bottom.

A completely new omnibox that supports top search engines and open search.

Video pop-out, which lets you play videos while you browse other web pages.

Videos can be popped out into their own adjustable, movable window so you can keep watching your favorite YouTube or Vimeo channels as you browse. We’ve also added a player panel that organizes all the tabs playing music or video into a single panel for quick access.

Snap-to-gallery lets you snapshot and crop any part of a web page and save it to the gallery for later.
Split screen mode lets you seamlessly view and interact with two pages at once.

Browsing one web page at a time doesn’t cut it any more. Split screen mode allows you to freely browse two web pages at once by simply dragging the visual tabs to the left or right panel. Without having to click back into the page, simply move your mouse pointer between pages for simultaneous browsing.

The camera icon on the left sidebar lets you to take a snapshot of the page, which then lands in your gallery under the landscape icon. You’ll find all your snaps there.

Crop, snap and save images of your next online purchase, a stunning photograph or a hilarious meme from the web and Opera Neon will save it to the gallery tab. Your image will be labeled with its web address so you can return to the source page later.

If you are interested, they have also released a free Neon-inspired wallpaper.
