Google Chrome Will Now Default to HTML5 Over Flash, Improving Battery Life

Google's latest Chrome version has effectively managed to pushed HTML5 as the default over Flash. The new Chrome 55 has now almost completely transitioned to HTML5, except for certain Flash-only sites and the top 10 sites on the Web for a year. The new version is now available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Google in August confirmed that it would start de-emphasising Flash and switch to HTML5. In October, Google rolled out Chrome 54 that started using HTML5 embed style for YouTube videos rather than the Flash Player.

According to Google, HTML5 provides faster load times and is more energy efficient when compared to Adobe Flash Player. With HTML5 now becoming the default in the latest version, users will be asked to enable Flash the first time they visit a website that has a Flash element. Google hopes that the prompt will push publishers to convert to HTML5 and ultimately remove Flash as an option.

According to 9to5google, websites where Flash will continue to work for a year by default are: YouTube.com, Facebook.com, Yahoo.com, VK.com, Live.com, Yandex.ru, OK.ru, Twitch.tv, Amazon.com, and Mail.ru.

Chrome 55 also includes CSS automatic hyphenation which will enable the browser to hyphenate words when line-wrapping thereby improving the look of text blocks.

Chrome 55 on Android - which will release soon - will bring a wider availability of the download feature (introduced with Chrome 54) for offline viewing of pages, images, and videos. A new button will now be displayed on media controls to indicate when a file can be saved.

Chrome for Android brings ‘offline download’ support, here’s how to use it

Earlier this year in September, Google introduced a slew of new features on Chrome beta for Android to make surfing better. The company added a ‘Data Saver’ mode to ensure webpages load faster on slower 2G connection. The feature compresses images and texts, while also saving 60 percent data. Google had also added ‘download’ feature for offline viewing. Now, the feature has finally come out of beta and is rolling out to a wider audience.

The latest Chrome for Android (v55.0.2883.84) brings performance and stability improvements, along with the ‘download’ feature. Google has also made improvements to contextual search UI and RAM usage optimizations. Android devices that have less than 1GB of RAM, will now use 35 percent less memory than before, Google mentioned on its blog .

The new Chrome for Android app also allows you to download music, videos and full web pages for offline viewing. There are certain restrictions though – you won’t be able to download videos from video streaming sites such as YouTube and Vimeo among others. You will only be able to download videos that have download button at the bottom.

How to download webpages and videos on Google Chrome for Android

Open Chrome and visit the web page that you want to download. On the top right corner, tap on the ‘three dots’ and you will see the download icon just besides the back and bookmark icon. Tapping on that icon will download the entire webpage content, including text and photos. Once downloaded, you will be able to see them under the ‘Downloads’ option.

In case of videos, you have the play / pause and seek bar at the bottom of the video player. Just besides that, you will also see a download icon if the video is downloadable. What’s more, you can even share the videos over Bluetooth, email and instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp.

Google has also made some improvements to the downloads. In case the network is unstable and the download is interrupted, it will resume automatically once it gets latched on to stable network. Another nifty addition in Chrome browser is the personalized content. Now, when you open a new tab, you will get smart suggestions based on the content that you were recently searching for, a feature similar to discover content on Google Now.
