Australia's key players facing injury problems

UkLLK.jpg

In England earlier this year, one Indian player after another was laid low with injury. This time around, it seems to be Australia's turn, with the hosts battling a similar outbreak of niggles and breakdowns.

With some new names joining the list, the situation has become even grimmer. While some of the niggles are said to be minor, it's finally time for some deft injury management as Oz selectors try to keep up with the latest updates ahead of the first Test against India on Dec 26.

Opening batsman David Warner's admission on Friday that he had stiffness in his back was just the latest in a long line of bad news for some of Australia's key players, all of whom were in the running for a place in the squad come Boxing Day.

Ishant Sharma doubtful for 1st Test

M6AbD.jpg

NEW DELHI/CANBERRA: Nightmares from the England tour are back to haunt India. With nine days to go before the first Test against Australia, it has emerged that pace bowler Ishant Sharma may be a doubtful starter because of his ankle injury. Reports indicated the team management had given itself a day to decide if they need a cover for the seamer from Delhi.

Ishant is expected to play a leading role in Australia, given an inexperienced bowling lineup and the fact that spearhead and 79-Test veteran Zaheer Khan is returning from a long injury layoff.

If Ishant, with experience of 41 Tests and a previous Australia tour, is out, it will be a severe setback for Dhoni's team. India will then be left with Umesh Yadav (2 Tests), Vinay Kumar (yet to debut) and A Mithun (4 Tests) in the pace department.

With his ankle injury flaring up, pacer Ishant Sharma's predicament has shaped up to be uncannily similar to Zaheer Khan's short stint in England.

Zaheer had hardly bowled in the tour opener against Somerset and then pulled up with a hamstring injury after bowling a few overs in the opening Test at Lord's.

India need Sehwag and Zaheer to fire together: Chappell

ofCSa.jpg

MELBOURNE: Former Australia captain Ian Chappell feels Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan's form will be crucial to India's success in the upcoming four-match Test series against Australia, starting on December 26.

"Sehwag makes big scores quickly and Zaheer has the ability to claim five-wicket hauls, two major ingredients when it comes to winning Test matches," Chappell said.

He said the Indian opener's duel with James Pattinson will shape the series.

"Sehwag's confrontation with Pattinson will not only be a highlight of the summer, it could well shape the series. Pattinson has a big advantage over most other opening bowlers who have been challenged by the belligerently brilliant Sehwag - he is led by a captain who isn't easily intimidated and won't cower behind a containment strategy," Chappell insisted.

He also felt India's bowling doesn't match up to the Kiwi attack in favourable conditions, adding that the struggling Aussie batsmen can relax if Zaheer is not fully fit as the visitors lack proven swing bowlers barring the left-armer.

"If the local curators continue to leave grass on the pitches, it will suit our emerging pace attack. The sight of greenish pitches will have the Indian batsmen reeling - and consequently the Australian pace bowlers will have a psychological advantage.

Our youth, enthusiasm vs India’s old wise heads: Clarke

QDUU5.jpg

Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke says the “youth and enthusiasm” of his team would be up against India’s “old wise heads” during the eagerly-awaited Test series from December 26.

“I think it’s going to be a really good contest between youth and enthusiasm versus some old wise heads in the Indian team,” Clarke wrote in his column for ‘The Daily Telegraph’.

Clarke admitted that the Australians have been going “one step forward and two steps backwards” in the rebuilding process which has brought with it some very disappointing results in the past few months.

“All of us feel we’re playing inconsistent cricket at the moment. We’re showing so many great signs when we’re playing well, but then we have episodes like Cape Town (shot out for 47) and the second innings against New Zealand at Bellerive that let us down,” he said.

“There definitely has been improvement in this group. We’re heading in the right direction. We have to be more consistent, but we’ve shown recently the depth of talent in Australian cricket.

“The Border-Gavaskar series gives us an excellent chance to start moving that way,” he added.

Talking about the Indian challenge, Clarke said handling the formidable batting line-up of the visitors would be quite a task but his batsmen should not find the inexperienced bowling of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men too hard to deal with.
