Pick younger players: Warne tells Test selectors

qu7iD.jpg

Spin legend Shane Warne today urged Australian cricket selectors to take some brave decisions and show faith on the youth by including youngsters in the Test side.

Former skipper Ricky Ponting and senior batsman Mike Hussey are currently struggling with form but they are likely to be retained for the Boxing day Test against India.

However, Warne said youth is the way forward for Australia, which succumbed to a seven-run loss to New Zealand in Hobart yesterday.

"Some brave decisions need to be made in the interests of Australian cricket to make sure that the best things happen and Australian cricket is strong," Warne was quoted as saying in the Australian Associated Press.

"For us it's about having stability, picking some younger players and stick with them and give them a chance."

The 41-year-old Warne said poor performance will always come under the scanner and one has to be prepared to make way for a better player for the betterment of the team.

"When you're winning you can carry a bowler, you can carry a batsman. When you start losing like we have in the last two series, getting bowled out for 47 [against South Africa] and then couldn't get a couple of hundred [scoring 233 chasing 241 to win in Hobart]. "When that happens everyone gets put under scrutiny. If you've been performing then you'll be okay. If you haven't been performing you're going to come under the microscope to get dropped and someone else is going to get a go," he said.

"That's life. Cricket is a performance-based game. If you don't perform you shouldn't be playing. They [the selectors] have to say who's available, who can take their place, are we going to make the team stronger? "Have we hung on to someone too long? Is there someone else we need to get in there? All those types of questions will be asked so it's a tough one for the selectors," he added.

Early arrival has given us enough time to tune up: Dhoni

India skipper MS Dhoni says team's early arrival in Australia has given them enough time for practice to be at their best in the Test series

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has acknowledged that his side is blessed with adequate time for preparation ahead of this month's Boxing Day (Dec 26) Test against Australia. "If 12 days are not enough to prepare (for Australia), then even a month won't be," Dhoni told reporters on the eve of today's first practice tie against the CA Chairman's XI here at the Manuka Oval.

Simon Katich in line for shock recall: Reports

kQUpm.jpg

SYDNEY: Opener Simon Katich could be in line for a shock recall to Australia's Test team, reports said on Friday, just weeks after being disciplined for outspoken comments about captain Michael Clarke.

The 36-year-old was reprimanded by a Cricket Australia hearing this month after he accused Clarke of playing a part in his axing from the Australian team, despite averaging 45 runs in his 56 Tests.

Katich was controversially dropped from Cricket Australia's contract list in June and he said at the time he doubted he would play for his country again as long as Clarke was skipper.

But Channel Nine, which televises cricket in Australia, said Clarke was now behind a push to reinstate Katich as the team looks to address their batting woes after a humiliating defeat to New Zealand earlier this week.

Katich's manager Robert Joske told reporters the player would be "willing, ready and able" to assume a place in the top order if selectors recalled him for the Boxing Day Test against India.

"If it's the fact that Michael is talking about Simon in the selection committee meetings I'm very excited and I'm sure Simon would be excited when he hears about it," said Joske.

"The coach and the chairman of selectors both said the door was always open to Simon and probably now is a very good time for him to walk through it."

Tough day for Indians

The Indian bowlers came in for some punishment after paceman Ishant Sharma came off the field after bowling just 5.3 overs on the opening day of the two-day warm-up game against a Cricket Australia Chairman's XI at the Manuka Oval here on Thursday.

Wes Robinson (143, 215b, 6x6, 13x4) and Tom Cooper (182 not out, 194b, 24x4, 3x6) scored centuries to steer their side to 398 for six declared off 86 overs.

The pair shared a 226-run stand for the third wicket.

With the tourists declaring that they wanted to use the match to give their relatively inexperienced bowlers plenty of practice in Australian conditions, skipper Rahul Dravid invited the Chairman's XI to bat.

In the 10th over, Umesh Yadav made the first breakthrough, having Ryan Broad caught behind for eight. Joe Burns was bowled by Ojha for 21 before Cooper and Robinson came together.

Earlier, India had a bit of a scare when Ishant took his hat from the umpire and walked off the ground, after just bowling three balls in his sixth over.

The Indian team management later quelled concerns over his fitness. Team officials insisted that Ishant merely needed to remove some strapping from his ankle that had loosened and become uncomfortable.

The scores: CA Chairman's XI 398 for six declared in 86 overs (W. Robinsion 143, T. Cooper 182 not out, Umesh Yadav three for 39) v The Indians.

'Ankle is fine, Ishant has no fitness issues'

Ishant Sharma walking off the field on the first day has caused some concern. The paceman, who broke down in England with an ankle injury, was due for surgery on his return home but told HT he was postponing it until after the Oz tour. He later consulted Dr Jatin Chaudhary, the alternative
medicine expert who treated Yuvraj Singh and Sania Mirza. He advised Ishant that surgery would not be required. "He had an excess growth of 3 mm on his ankle which we had dissolved to 1 mm. He was alright and fit to bowl," Chaudhary told HT.

His coach Shravan Kumar said: "Before leaving, he appeared fit. He bowled at my nets for about one to one-and-half hours on Sunday."
