BCCI, team management maintain silence on Ishant's condition, possible replacement

lKT9z.jpg

NEW DELHI: Apart from boasting a pathetic record when it comes to injury management, India's cricket board (BCCI) and team management have always revelled in rumour mongering.

Fitness status of players is kept shrouded in incomprehensible secrecy, even though the team may pay the price on the field, like in England recently. But even by their standards, what is happening in Australia with Ishant Sharma - and his possible replacement, or non-replacement as the case may be - is bizarre.

With his ankle injury flaring up, Ishant is sitting out of India's final tour game before the Boxing Day Test and has been reluctant to bowl in the nets too. The impression that has emerged is that the player is not match fit yet for the Test, but no one knows if a replacement is flying out; or whether the team management wants a replacement. Initial reports from Canberra a day before the practice game, though, had indicated the team was giving itself 24 hours to decide on a cover for the Delhi seamer.

I don't see any competition with Rohit, says Kohli

Vdeca.jpg

CANBERRA: Promising middle-order batsman Virat Kohli doesn't see any competition with compatriot Rohit Sharma on the ongoing Australian tour or in near future as he has little doubt that both would be serving the Indian team in the days to come.

The two steadied India's innings with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 78 as they progressed to 162 for four in their three-day warm-up match against Cricket Australia's Chairman's XI on Monday.

"We know in future we are going to play for the team so I don't see any competition in that, it's just a matter of who gets to play when, who gets into that zone and start scoring runs," Kohli said after his unbeaten 55 at the Manuka Oval in the run-up to the four-match Test series starting December 26.

"I kept being asked this question, there is always competition for a particular spot in the team. You've 2-3 good players waiting to grab the chance."

While Kohli's consistency over the past one year has helped him stake claim for the number six spot, Sharma, after his brilliant batting display against the West Indies recently, is giving the Delhi lad competition.

A ‘helper' for Tendulkar

0PzY1.jpg

A cricket enthusiast listed in the Indian touring squad as an “attendant” is helping Sachin Tendulkar prepare for India's quest to win its first Test series in Australia, reports said on Monday.

Raghavindraa has never played first-class cricket but what he lacks in playing expertise he makes up for with enthusiasm and his presence in Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald said.

Raghavindraa is being used on tour for his throw-down skills in the practice nets and the Herald said he has come with strong recommendations from Tendulkar and fellow Indian batsman Rahul Dravid.

The newspaper said Raghavindraa, 27, is listed as an “attendant” on a Board of Control for Cricket in India news release, and is an employee at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. A Herald reporter watched Raghavindraa during a Sunday net session with Tendulkar at Canberra's Manuka Oval in which he threw balls at the batting maestro for an hour.

Raghavindraa helped Tendulkar prepare for the barrage of outswingers he is likely to receive from Australia's rising pace star James Pattinson ahead of the opening Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26.

“The session did not always go to plan. After a series of deliveries on his pads, Tendulkar put his bat down for several minutes to show Raghavindraa the wrist position required to enable the ball to shape away from the right-hander,” the newspaper said.

Team India bemused at reports of walk-out of warm-up game

T3B8X.jpg

Team India is bemused and laughing their guts out at the suggestion in Australian media that they toyed with the idea of boycotting the ongoing three-day warm-up game against Cricket Australia Chairman's XI here because of rain.

“The story is completely baseless. There is no truth in it. Rain is part of cricket. You don't leave a venue only because it's raining,” said Indian team's media manager G S Walia.

It rained heavily on the night prior to the start of the three-day game between the tourists and Cricket Australia Chairman's XI, forcing the game to begin only after lunch on Monday.

The Australian media has gone to town stating that India were contemplating heading for Melbourne for better practice sessions, leading up to the first Test starting there on December 26.

The reports said that a member of the support staff, travelling with the Indian team, had actually enquired with the groundsman at the Manuka Oval about the effect persistent rain would have on the three-day match.

CA, Aus media getting paranoid about Duncan Fletcher

eTj0s.jpg

India coach Duncan Fletcher has made both local media and Cricket Australia set-up paranoid ahead of the four-match Test series starting on December 26.

While Fletcher's technical expertise has forced Australian coach Mickey Arthur to order a three-day camp for his batsmen, the local media sees his remotely operated hand behind the suggestion yesterday that Indians were close to abandoning the three-day fixture against CA Chairman's XI here and move to Melbourne.

Fletcher has termed Australian captain Michael Clarke as a 'nicker' for his tendency to reach out to drive outside his off-stump and Arthur has no doubt he would have done similar assessment on his other batsmen.

“He's a fantastic technician. He will try to unpick the Australian players' techniques, he is very good at that, and he will present a team that's very well prepared,” said Arthur.

Bowling will be India's weak link: Shane Warne

vVZjZ.jpg

Australia's spin legend Shane Warne feels that bowling will be India's weak link in the four-Test series starting in Melbourne.

Warne said injuries to frontline pacers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma will doom India.

"England just beat them 4-0. India have got some wonderful batting but their bowling is a bit weak.

And if Zaheer Khan or Ishant Sharma goes down with injury then it should be a good time for the Australian batters," Warne was quoted as saying by Herald Sun.

I want to work hard: Rahul Dravid

w6fWQ.jpg

Read on to know why Rahul Dravid hit the nets thrice in Canberra yesterday

His "We (India and Australia) were comrades before competitors" phrase from last week's Bradman Oration has left the cricket fraternity in Australia even more in awe of Rahul Dravid. On Sunday, the Daily Telegraph carried the headline: "We fear Dravid and Goliath" - referring to VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag as the latter.

A few days ago, Colonel Michael McGregor, a former columnist with The Australian, and author of an upcoming book on the summer of Indian cricket, said that he was left stunned with Dravid's level of acumen and knowledge he boasted about the history between the two nations, especially for a sportsperson.

Going by form and mindset, this could be Dravid's summer. Apart from the 2003-04 tour when he scored 619 runs in four Tests, Dravid hasn't done justice to his appetite for hundreds in these parts. Rest assured he is putting in the hard yards to rectify that.

Besides missing a net last Wednesday (the evening when he left the cricketing world inspired by his lecture), Dravid has been at the Manuka Oval nets each and every day, toiling away. Yesterday, he hit the nets for a record third occasion, albeit the start-stop showers.

Along with fielding coach Trevor Penney, bowling coach Eric Simons, and throwdown man Raghavindraa, he returned soon after rain stopped in the evening. But the inspiring bit was his restlessness to get back out there. He personally uncovered the practice wickets; there was nobody from Cricket ACT to help him out.

This happened even as Simons and Penney looked around, hoping for help to arrive. Tired of trying to uncover the center wicket, "Let's just use those nets," Dravid told his crew, pointing to the pitch he had already uncovered.

Ishant will play opening Test: Eric Simons

2d7uczq.jpg

India's bowling coach settles raging debate; tells MiD DAY that sharma, who had an ankle problem in a recent tour game, will be back to bowling at full steam soon

Ishant Sharma hit the nets when Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane were batting in the second warm-up match against CA Chairman's XI here at Manuka Oval yesterday. Ishant though, healing from a troublesome ankle, took a few strides and rolled his arm over at best, having been advised two days' rest by the doctor he consulted during the course of the first warm-up match last week.
"I am doing a lot better. Thank you," he said when asked about his recovery. India's bowling coach Eric Simons, the longest serving member of the current coaching staff, shares a good relationship with Ishant. "He's doing alright, and should be back to bowling at full steam very soon. There's no reason why he can't play the first Test," Simons told MiD DAY yesterday.
