Wi-Fi service will be rolled out at Puri railway station ahead of the annual Rath Jatra of Lord Jagannath tomorrow. An official of the ECoR said, designed to offer users the best internet experience, RailWire Wi-Fi will be available to any user who has a working mobile connection on a smartphone or a laptop device. This is a part of East Coast Railway’s continuing endeavour to provide more and better comfort to passengers.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had on April 17 made a public commitment regarding proposed commissioning of the services before the Rath Yatra.
“The same commitment has been met before the holy festival and East Coast Railway feels privileged to be playing a humble part in the service of pilgrims visiting Puri for the Rath Yatra,” an official statement said.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on recently also launched free Wi-Fi service at three more railway stations across India via video conferencing. These stations are at Patna in Bihar, Visakhapatnam in Odisha and Ranchi in Jharkhand. So far, Mumbai Central, Bhubaneshwar, Kachiguda, Vijayawada, Raipur, Bhopal and Jaipur have got Wi-Fi facility. The minister said the government planned to introduce the service at all major railway stations in the country in three years.
The services will be provided under ‘Railwire’, the retail broadband distribution model of Railtel. Mumbai Central was the first railway station in the country with free Wi-Fi facility. Last year, Google India and Indian Railways joined hands to introduce high-speed Wi-Fi network at 400 stations in the country.
