The phone camera is of 12MP only. Then why 'Original' quality can't be saved/uploaded? What am I missing?

Original quality means no size reduction. Even if the camera is 12 MP, the image size can be large, depending on the shot taken. Google does it's own compression while the image is uploaded to reduce the size. Otherwise, they won't be able to offer this for everyone. Read more here.
