Google Maps Updates

Google has been regularly releasing updates and new features for its search engine and its apps. One of the new features that is set to come to Google Maps will indicate speed limit on a user’s route. Along with Maps, Google is also said to be adding the feature to Android Auto. Recently, a Reddit user posted a screenshot on the website of Google Maps showing a speed limit sign in the bottom left corner of the screen. Another photo, shared by Android Police, shows a similar indicator sitting at the lower right of the in-car Android Auto interface.

Apparently, a lot of users globally have been requesting Google to add the speed limit tool to the app. Up until now, people have been using third party apps like Maps Speed Limits to track their speeds on their route. Many
Android users in US and UK claim to have spotted the speed limit indicator on their Google maps app, however many said that the feature appeared for a brief period, and then disappeared a few hours later. For now, Google has made no official statement about the tool, and it is unclear if and when the feature will officially arrive on the app, however, the inclusion of the feature could prove to be a bonus for drivers around the world, and could work as an effective tool to avoid accidents or mishaps.

Last month, Google updated its Maps app with some improvements to better the connectivity of the app, and to make it more data efficient. Google introduced a new Wi-Fi only offline mode , which allows one to use Maps without an internet connection. This feature comes in handy for those who haven’t subscribed to a mobile data plan or are on plans with limited data and are afraid Google Maps would consume a huge chunk of data from their plan.

Another feature recently added to the Google Maps is the ability for users to save maps offline on an SD card. Google wrote on its blog post while announced the feature that entry-level smartphones come with storage capacity as low as 4GB, which is not enough for storing music, apps, videos and more. However, with the ability to save offline maps to SD card, users will no longer need to delete their photos and other content, just to navigate offline. The feature can also prove to be a boon for those travelling overseas, they could simply download all maps offline and avoid the massive data roaming charges. Additionally, in the new feature Google Maps also supports turn-by-turn navigation in offline mode.

Among the other improvements to Google Maps, the app has also gained support for traffic alerts in India. Also, Google added a multiple destinations support to the app. The
multiple destination feature allows users to add different destinations after they have entered the start and end point of a trip. Therefore, instead of waiting for a trip to get over and mapping individual routes between two points, user can now navigate directions from point A to point B to point C to point D and so on.

Google Maps is one handy app for people to navigate in not only new places but even in their own residing places. With each update, Google has been integrating features which is aimed at making Maps more efficient for its users. Just recently Google Maps enabled the Wi-Fi-only mode to save mobile data for subscribers who rely on mobile data for their internet use. A new update is available for Android users as Google Maps is now interconnected with Google’s Calendar app. With this new update, the events that are updated on the Calendar app will be synced with Google Maps and one can easily access the directions of their saved events.

For this to work properly, one needs to fill in the address in the ‘Where’ box so that the location will appear on Google Maps. One also needs to be signed in to both Google Maps and Google Calendar at the same time. To view this, select the sidebar menu on Google Maps which is located on the top left corner of the search bar. After that, select ‘Your Places’, wherein you will notice a new tab called ‘Upcoming’. On selecting that, the events that have been entered with the proper address on Google Calendar can be seen.

The list of events entered on Calendar app will be visible on the Upcoming tab. On selecting the event, it will lead you right to the address with the directions as seen on Maps. Next to the name of the event, is an option when clicked gives you the option of viewing the event or dismissing it. So you can easily hide the event by clicking on the ‘Dismiss’ option. This feature is currently available for Android users only.

Google has also enabled interactive icons which can be used on the Home and Work address options under the ‘Labeled’ tab. The icons are in the form of different homes and work places and you can choose which fits the closest to your home or work place. Google has also made using its digital assistant ‘OK Google’ for Maps. If there are places you frequent, then you can label them and enter a name. This makes it easier to simply say, “OK Google, navigate to home,” for example.

Google already includes the confirmation emails received for hotel, flight or restaurant reservations on your Gmail to Maps. Now you can view those events as well on the ‘Upcoming’ tab under ‘Your Places’. Google contacts have also been integrated on Google Maps. So now you can directly search for your contacts address on Google Maps , provided the address is attached with the contact from before. There is a new Personal Content manager as well under ‘Your Places’ which can be located by selecting the settings option. Under that, one has the options to toggle on and off for categories like Labels, Google Contacts, Upcoming events, Google Photos and more. With this, one can easily monitor which locations and addresses are shown on Google Maps for future references.

Google Maps made it into the update cycle this week, bumping the version number up to 9.39. This update appears to be a bit lighter than many from the last few months, but it's not completely lacking improvements. There's a new shortcut that can be used to jump directly into the traffic screen. A quick teardown also reveals a potential improvement to the busyness chart on many locations. As always, we've got a link below to pick up the APK.

What's New

Unofficial Changelog:

New traffic widget

Thanks to the millions of active smartphones roaming around the planet at any given time, Google is able to create a fairly accurate image of what traffic conditions are like. A few weeks back, Google added a new notification to to warn users about potential traffic issues before they get on the road, linking it to a screen with a map with the current traffic situation. If that notification wasn't quite timely enough, the new version of Maps introduces a more consistent way to get back to that screen at any time with a handy shortcut for your homescreen.

There are two ways to add the shortcut to your homescreen. To begin with, it's located in the regular widget/shortcut list, so there's no need to even open the Maps app to track it down, unlike the Timeline shortcut (for no obvious reason). If you end up on the traffic screen through the notification, you can also drag the card upward to find a suggestion to add the shortcut.

Teardown

Disclaimer: Teardowns are based on evidence found inside of apks (Android's application package) and are necessarily speculative and usually based on incomplete information. It's possible that the guesses made here are totally and completely wrong. Even when predictions are correct, there is always a chance that plans could change or may be canceled entirely. Much like rumors, nothing is certain until it's officially announced and released.

The features discussed below are probably not live yet, or may only be live for a small percentage of users. Unless stated otherwise, don't expect to see these features if you install the apk.

The scale showing popular times can be a handy way to figure out if you're about to walk into a restaurant or other public location and find it packed to the brim with people. However, the scale can occasionally be misleading, especially if there are special events, recent changes, or some other factor that's either driving people to the same place, or possible away from it. If you're really trying to judge how full a place is before walking in the door, you really need up-to-date information... And that's exactly what Google Maps has in store.

It's really no surprise this feature is coming, the same thing recently turned up in a dogfood version of the web interface for Google Search. There's not much to look at for evidence – just a single string – but as the screenshot above shows, it doesn't take much to make the confirmation. The line is named busyness_live, which shares the same busyness prefix found in the other strings used with the popular times chart. It's safe to assume the two charts will look the same, given that the two versions are generally identical.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK from apk mirror.

Google Maps’ new feature shows you nearby traffic status in real-time

Google Maps is constantly on the look-out for more enhancements for its mapping service. The service not only allows users to find their way around in a city, but also offers weather updates, and real-time traffic information so that every time a user steps out in the sun, they know which is the shortest and least crowded way to their destination. Shortly after integrating Calendar events, Google Maps has now introduced an all-new feature to its Android app that will allow users to spot nearby traffic in real-time. The new feature, called ‘Traffic Nearby’, is a shortcut that allows users to locate congested areas around their current location with a single tap. All that one needs to do is add the shortcut to their home screens, and every time they run the shortcut, based on their location, real-time data will be provided.
The new feature is available in Google Maps
for Android version 9.39. It displays congested roads and areas and works without having to enter a destination or get into the driving mode. It basically offers what can be called a preview of traffic, before you plan your outing. Given the large number of Google Maps users, the service has been able to draw an accurate image of live traffic conditions to an extent. Before the latest update, Google Maps would automatically send traffic alerts to users on-the-go so as to enable them to quickly re-route their journey in case of long jams. The latest update works like a shortcut without one having to wait for the automated alerts.

One can add the Google Maps traffic update shortcut in two ways. First – Pulling the ‘Traffic Nearby’ screen from the regular widget or shortcut list, which does away with the need to separately open the app to track traffic status. Second – If you are redirected through the traffic alert then you can also drag the card upward to find an ‘add shortcut’ suggestion. The new ‘Traffic Nearby’ feature comes close on the heels of Google’s recent update that allowed users to connect the Google Calendar app with the mapping service. With this feature, events that are updated on the Calendar app are synced with Google Maps and one can easily access the directions of their saved events. What makes Google Maps popular than Apple’s still shoddy mapping service is its ease of usage and given the number of people using it, it has a larger database of real-time traffic, weather, and location information. Recently, the app also introduced a smarter way for users to interact. It introduced what it called a ‘hands-free’ support. By using voice commands, users could look up for directions or get weather updates along with the ability to mark multiple waypoints on a single trip.

Google Maps’ new feature shows you nearby traffic status in real-time

Google Maps over the years has gained several users specific features including real-time transit information in select cities and as well as the ability to warn users if they were navigating to a place that would already be closed by the estimated time of arrival. Now, the app has upgraded its Popular Times feature with real-time data to show you how popular a place is 'right now'.

The company says that the new feature will be available to users "in time for the Black Friday swarms" and can be accessed via Google Search and Maps. "All these tips are just a tap away in Google Search and Maps," said Jamie Aspinall, Product Manager, in announcement blog post. After checking the respective apps, we can confirm that the feature isn't currently available in the latest Search and Google Maps app versions in India. We can expect the feature to gradually rollout to Google Maps and Search users worldwide. As seen in the image above, the regular Popular Times graph will feature a Live tag.

The new Google Maps can come really handy for those users planning their shopping spree during the extremely hectic Black Friday day sale. Apart from real-time data, Google Maps will now be able to show "how long people typically stay at a given location" which can help planning itinerary to the minute.

Another new feature is detailed service hours which will now show up in Google Maps and which is part of the new update. Google Maps will be able to offer a detailed business hours of different sections at a store, business place, or a restaurant. With the update, Google Maps will be able to offer specific visiting timing of a gallery for example if you are at a place nearby.

Google Search can now show how crowded your favorite cafe or restaurant in realtime

Google Search is getting better with every new update and feature additions. Earlier this year, Google added a feature called Popular Times in Maps and Google Search, which shows predictions of how busy the restaurant or café might be at different times of the day. Now, the company has updated the feature to show how crowded the place is in real-time. The feature will help you in deciding when and where to go, and avoiding disappointment by finding it unexpectedly crowded.

So let’s say I’m planning to head over to Starbucks in Koramangala, a simple search ‘Starbucks Koramangala’ shows me details right from the address, hours of operation and popular times with a simple graph, and real-time status in the ‘Live’ option. Along with live status, it also shows the graph of peak crowded hours and other details. From the graph, I can figure out if the location is busier or empty than usual. Under popular times, there is also an option to select days giving a rough idea of days it is the least and most crowded.

Just below the graph, you also get an estimate of how long people typically spend time at the café or restaurant. After all, you’d want to be sure if you would have enough time to enjoy a cup of tea / coffee or have your meal peacefully. You can also find details related to department and service hours.

Businesses and stores can have multiple hours for special services and departments. Google can now let you see working hours of the local drugstore or supermarket, and other details such as the food delivery times of a nearby restaurant. Also, if want to get the brakes of your car checked, Google Search can show the service hours of the auto dealership. As of now, details of only popular restaurants, cafés and businesses are available, but it is set to expand going forward.

Among other features, Google had added the ability to let you book an Uber or Ola cab right from the search. You can also order food via Swiggy and Zomato from search results. Other recent additions include at-a-glance summaries about earthquakes, suggestions on how much time one should spend at a popular tourist destination, basic healthcare information, and details about when the local businesses are the busiest among others.

Google Search can now show how crowded your favorite café or restaurant is in real-time

Rahul bro, when you are posting similar info again, post it in your earlier thread itself.

After introducing the in-app food ordering service, Google Maps for iOS has received an update that brings a host of improvements and new features to the navigation app. This includes a new traffic widget assessing the situation in your location, and the ability to search for places nearby while on route.

This update bumps up the Google Maps version to 4.25.0. As we mentioned, it introduces a new widget on the screen that displays the real-time traffic situation in your location. For example, if you're at home, Google Maps will assess the traffic situation in your area and notify you if there is light or heavy traffic near you house. If the traffic is not so congested, the widget will display something like, 'Light traffic in your area. Faster than usual.' This 'Nearby traffic' widget is already active for Android users.

Google Maps for iOS also brings the ability to search for places nearby while driving. For example, you head for a road trip and your navigation is on for reaching a destination. Mid-route if you decide you're hungry, Google Maps will now throw results of restaurants in vicinity. Using the app's turn-by-turn navigation feature, you can search for nearby gas stations, hotels, or even a specific place of your preference. Android users got this feature last year.

The update has also removed the Travel Times and Transit widgets that were introduced in October. There's no clarity on why these widgets were removed, or whether they will make a comeback. In any case, you can download Google Maps v4.25.0 from the App Store.
