Local Guides can begin submitting videos to Google Maps

A teardown of Google Maps v.9.58 turned up some signs that video contributions would become a feature in the very near future. If you're registered as a Local Guide, that time has come. Or at least it's coming, this seems to have only just started rolling out to members of the program today. It doesn't seem as though the videos are actually visible from the detail views yet, but that will probably come soon enough.

Google Maps' picture-in-picture mode officially rolling out soon

One of Android Oreo's main new features is picture-in-picture mode, which launches apps into little windows that go over other apps. It was added to Google Maps a couple weeks ago, but it wasn't functioning properly until a few days ago. Even now, however, it isn't fully working, with PiP windows sometimes not triggering when users hit the home button during navigation. Google is saying that this will be fixed soon, marking the official rollout of PiP for Maps.

On Friday morning, two days after Karnataka Rajyotsava, citizens were pleasantly surprised to see that the names of all places on the map were written in Kannada, just below the English script.

A Google India spokesperson said that the feature was part of the “localisation initiative” already released in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu, over the last few months. The feature is automatically activated on the app depending on the geographical location: Hindi for all of north India, Bengali for West Bengal, Tamil for Tamil Nadu and Telugu for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and now Kannada for Karnataka.

Now, Kannada also on Google Maps
