Google has announced an update to Hangouts, its instant messaging app for Android devices. This update brings the much-desired status availability feature on the Google Hangouts app. Users have been missing this feature on the Hangouts app since Google replaced the Google Talk app on Android devices with the Google Hangouts app a couple of months back.

Now it is easy to distinguish between online and offline users on Hangouts. "Green icons mean they are, and grey icons mean they aren't," said Randall Sarafa, spokesman, Google, in a blog post on Google+. Google has started rolling out the update and the new version is expected to be available to users over the next few days.

There are other new features that will be available to users with the new version. From top to bottom users will get to see 'People you Hangout with', 'Suggested People', and 'Other Contacts'. Hangout invites are now located above conversations. The new verison will now allow users to hide people from the New Hangout screen by pressing their name for a few seconds and touching 'Hide contact.'

Google also updated the UI. A separate dialer is also available from Google to use the voice calls. Check out this update on Play store.

Google announced yesterday that users in 25 countries will now get the first minute free on any international call they make via its Hangouts app.

Google’s Hangouts app for desktops and mobile has long allowed for instant messaging, video chat and calls to phone numbers (including free calls to US and Canada) using an internet connection. The free minute now lets you say a quick hello or deliver an important message at no charge.

However, you’ll need to have some calling credit in your Google account (that you can add with your credit card) to get your first minute free, as you’ll be charged for the duration of your call beyond that first minute. You can look up the rates for voice calls here.

I tried the service today and found it to work just fine on my iPhone — and a minute was enough to check in on my parents and find out how our dog is doing. You can try it too using Hangouts on your desktop or mobile device, and even try out the Hangouts Dialer app for Android if you like.

The free minute is available to users in these countries:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China
  • Dominican Republic
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Peru
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

RE: Google Hangouts introduces free one-minute international calls in 25 countries

nice update bro

Folks in India can now make free voice calls to U.S. and Canada usingGoogle Hangouts for Android, web, or iOS. As always, you can make free calls to other web users free, and for other countries, you can make calls for a nominal fee.

Lots of countries are enjoying free voice calls through Hangouts, and Google just started dishing out a free first minute.
