NEW DELHI: In what could change the way traffic and law and order is maintained in the city, Delhi police for the first time used a chopper to monitor crowd movement during the Durga Puja idol immersion procession this afternoon.

The choppers conducted sorties over roads connecting the river bank from Kalindi Kunj and Qudsia Ghat for around four hour to spot the congestion points.

The police brass had moved the proposal for the aircraft on Thursday and got the home ministry's nod soon after that.

Senior special commissioner of police, Dharmendra Kumar, was himself onboard the chopper along with traffic cops to monitor things on the ground. The teams were connected through wireless sets. The twin engine helicopter was hired from Pawan Hans Helicopters. Sources say, the choppers could be roped in for various law and order maintaince as well.
