Argentina's Aguero to miss Switzerland game

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero will miss the upcoming last 16 clash with Switzerland after suffering a muscle injury in his left leg and could be out of the World Cup should they progress.

Aguero's injury in the 3-2 victory over Nigeria on Wednesday is a major blow to the South Americans' campaign to capture a third World Cup, this time on the soil of their great rivals Brazil.

Team doctor Daniel Martinez told reporters the 26-year-old was undergoing magnetic resonance and other urgent treatments at the team's camp in Belo Horizonte.

"We have available all the resources to progress as quickly as possible," he said. "He won't be ready for the Switzerland game, and from there we'll check his evolution day-by-day."

Other sources close to the team said Aguero would almost certainly also be out for further games assuming Argentina progress.

The Manchester City forward, part of Argentina's so-called "Fab Four" of strikers, was taken off during the first half of the match against Nigeria that gave them top spot in Group F.

Nicknamed "Kun" after a Japanese cartoon character, Aguero is a close friend of national captain Lionel Messi and is also the father of Diego Maradona's first grandson.

Argentina play Switzerland in Sao Paulo on Tuesday.

Fellow strikers Ezequiel Lavezzi or Rodrigo Palacio could take Aguero's place.

"We have forwards of the same style as Aguero and others, with a different style, like Lavezzi, who came in and handled himself well on the wings and helped us cover spaces," coach Alejandro Sabella said after the Nigeria game, where Lavezzi replaced Aguero.

BRAZIL ARE THROUGH! A truly gripping match of football comes to an end and Chile's run at the tournament with it. Brazil rode their luck and were almost defeated in the final seconds of extra-time when Pinilla struck the crossbar, but Neymar and Co. ultimately produced the good from the penalty spot. Chile will be disappointed with some of their spot-kicks, but they depart having enthralled many. The first round of 16 match is over and hosts Brazil are through to the quarter-finals.

Brazil Sweat on Neymar Injury, Luiz Gustavo Suspended

Belo Horizonte: Brazil were left to count the cost of Saturday's World Cup last-16 victory over Chile as Neymar suffered a thigh knock and midfielder Luiz Gustavo picked up a second yellow card.

"We need to evaluate it but we should have three, four or five days to try and make sure he can play the next game," said Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari of Neymar, who took a heavy knock to the thigh after a crunching challenge from Charles Aranguiz with the match just four minutes old.

"I don't understand how you can do that and not be booked," added Scolari of a challenge that left Neymar requiring treatment.

Neymar at least managed to complete the game and avoid receiving a yellow card that would have ruled him out of next Friday's quarter-final against Colombia.
However, Brazil will have to do without another key player in that match after midfielder Luiz Gustavo was booked for the second time in the competition.

The Wolfsburg player has been one of the hosts' best performers so far and Scolari may now be forced to recall the under-fire Paulinho, who was dropped from the starting line-up against Chile.
