Costa Rica fume as FIFA tests 7 of their players for drugs

The World Cup's biggest controversy is here with world football up in arms after seven Costa Rican players were called for dope tests by FIFA after their 1-0 win over Italy which secured qualification to the 2nd round.

As per FIFA norms, it is customary for two players from a team to be tested for drugs after a match - but the decision to test seven Costa Rican players including the goal-scorer in that Italy game - Bryan Ruiz - has raised several eyebrows, with Argentinian legend Diego Maradonna accusing football's governing body of discrimination. FIFA though maintain that this is a routine drug test - and that additional players were called in because they weren't available earlier.

"Why test seven players from Costa Rica and not seven from Italy?" Maradona, the 1986 World Cup winner, said. "It's against the rules. Two players from each team are supposed to undergo doping controls. I know what I'm talking about because it happened to me. But seven players? I've never seen something like that.
"Taking seven Costa Ricans to doping shows a lack of respect to the players and to the rules. Costa Rica had an incredible qualification. They had three world champions in the group and they beat them with good football."

Costa Rica, who beat Uruguay 3-1 in their opening tie, face England in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday. The small central American nation need only a point to ensure that they advance to the last 16 as the group winners.

Costa Rica coach, Jorge Luis Pinto, reacted to this decision saying: "We love it, we don't feel fear, on the contrary, we like it. There is a premise about this, why they are doing doping tests to Costa Rica. This is the question I made myself at the first moment, and it is because we are running, Costa Rica runs, and runs, and all my teams run and I congratulate the players for this. They can go on doing doping tests to us."

Belgium are through to the Round of 16 after an attritional affair in Rio de Janeiro. The Red Devils always looked most likely to create clear-cut opportunities and it was Eden Hazard who found the required touch of magic just two minutes from time. His mazy run down the Belgian left teed up Divock Origi, who became the youngest Beligan World Cup scorer and the seventh-youngest in the tournament's history with his late winner. Russia are still in the competition, but their chances of progressing are slim at best.

Algeria win at the World Cup for the first time in over three decades, with a 4-2 win over South Korea in Porto Alegre. Goals from Slimani, Brahimi, Halliche and Djabou were enough for Halilhodzic's men, despite goals from Son and Koo making the second half quite a nervy affair.

The draw means a win or tie against Germany would still see the USA through, as would a loss and a Portugal-Ghana tie. A loss and a Portuguese victory would come down to goal difference, where the USA still hold the advantage. Portugal need a win and some help to qualify, but it's a lot better than having no hope at all.

Van Gaal accuses FIFA of dirty tricks, claims WC fixture lists favours Brazil

Netherlands boss Louis van Gall has reportedly accused FIFA of dirty tricks claiming that the World Cup fixture list favours possible last-16 opponents Brazil.

Van Gaal slammed the governing body for lack of fair play over the timings of group games for the host nation and is reportedly angry that Brazil would play their final Group A match against Cameroon in Brasilia on Monday, four hours after his side kick off against Chile in Sao Paulo.

According to The Mirror, Van Gaal believes that Brazil would have the advantage of knowing the identity of their likely last-16 opponents, having played their first two group matches before Holland, by the time they face Cameroon on Monday.

Van Gaal said that FIFA, for every match, have this advertisement around fair play, but they play these tricks and it is not a good thing, it is not fair play.

The Dutchman said that Holland is going to focus on a victory against Chile and he does not think that would be affected by the fact that Brazil would play after them, adding that he is just assuming that the hosts would do their sporting duty.

Van Gaal questioned why on earth FIFA are doing that with the fixtures and said that he can well imaging that Brazil does not want to face Holland because his side has scored a lot of goals and fantastic goals.

Brazil would face the loser of Holland's match with Chile in Belo Horizonte on Saturday if the hosts win Group A, the report added.
