Manchester United to step up pursuit of Luke Shaw
Manchester United will step up their pursuit of Southampton full-back Luke Shaw after England’s final World Cup group game against Costa Rica on Tuesday evening.
Former United manager David Moyes did much of the ground-work to convince the 18-year-old that his future lies at Old Trafford before he was sacked at the end of April and it is understood that a wage package has been agreed that would make Shaw the highest earning youngster at Old Trafford, with a weekly salary approaching £100,000-a-week.
United made their first move with a £27million offer towards the end of May but progress stalled after the two clubs failed to push through the signing before Shaw’s involvement in the World Cup, while Southampton’s change of manager adding to the complications.
Southampton, now managed by Ronald Koeman, are under no financial pressure to sell and they are holding out for a figure closer to the £30million mark, with Shaw’s employers aware that they have the best young left-back in the world on their hands.
New manager Louis van Gaal is aware of the need for reinforcements in the United back-line and although Patrice Evra has been retained for one more year, the Dutchman is aware that the 33-year-old cannot be expected to play almost every game as he did last season under Moyes.
Current understudy Alex Buttner will be moved on this summer, with Dynamo Moscow in pole position to sign the left-back.
It leaves United in urgent need of a new full-back and they have been encouraged that the player has made it clear to Southampton that he would like a move to United to go through and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will look to secure the England star’s signature once England return from Brazil on Wednesday.
United will not, however, be held to ransom and if negotiations were to slow down once more, they may be forced to look at alternatives, with Ajax’s Daley Blind emerging as a £12.5million target following his impressive performances for Van Gaal’s Holland at the World Cup.
United, meanwhile, will wait until after the World Cup to make a formal offer in the region of £9million to Arsenal for defender Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian defender is privately confident that personal terms are in place with the Old Trafford club, with Vermaelen’s contract at Arsenal expiring next summer.
The 28-year-old’s close friendship with Robin van Persie is believed to have helped matters, while United see the move as a pragmatic solution to the void of Premier League experience that has been left following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Patrice Evra signs one-year contract with Manchester United
French defender Patrice Evra has signed a one-year contract with Barclays Premier League club Manchester United on Friday.
The left back's deal was due to expire next month, but a 12-month extension will keep him at Old Trafford into a 10th year. Evra was linked with a return to previous club Monaco during the final months of David Moyes' reign, and United recently tabled a £27m bid for Southampton's Luke Shaw.
But the 33-year-old, who was bought in the 2006 January transfer window, has chosen not to follow Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out of the club. And he will now form part of Louis van Gaal's first United squad.
A tweet from United's official Twitter account account read: "We can confirm that Patrice Evra has extended his contract at mufc for another year."
Evra, who was reported to be in talks with Juventus earlier this week, would help Shaw's transition into the United first team, should the club complete the signing of the England international this summer.
Evra's contract extension will be welcomed by the vast majority of United fans, who have taken the 33-year-old to their hearts since he joined from Monaco in 2006. Evra is a popular member of the dressing room too and is also renowned for his leadership skills.
The former Nice defender, who has played 379 times for United, also showed glimpses of decent form last season despite the club's woeful campaign under David Moyes.
He scored a stunning goal to put United ahead at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, although it was not enough to stop his team crashing out of the competition at the Allianz Arena.
Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa is another player to have been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but he is keeping his focus on Japan's World Cup bid rather than his own future.
"I think everyone knows I want to do well at the World Cup, and I'm sure everyone else does, too," he told Kyodo news agency this week at Japan's training camp. "But I don't want to get my priorities mixed up here - the important thing is for Japan to win at the World Cup. I'm not using the World Cup as a place to showcase myself for (van Gaal)."
United are reportedly interested in signing German midfielder Toni Kroos, but he has revealed that he expects to stay at Bayern Munich.
"There was a lot of speculation, but Manchester is and was not an issue," said Kroos. "At this point in time I am fully focused on preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup."

Diego Costa Undergoes Chelsea F.C. Medical: Reports
London: Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has completed a medical examination with a view to joining Premier League giants Chelsea, according to reports in the British media on Wednesday.
The BBC and The Guardian both claimed that the Brazil-born player, who is currently preparing for the World Cup with Spain in the United States, is now close to completing a move to Stamford Bridge.
Costa, 25, is expected to cost Chelsea around £32 million ($53.6 million, 39.4 million euros).
The rugged centre-forward scored 27 league goals and eight Champions League goals last season for Atletico, who won La Liga and were beaten 4-1 by Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Lisbon.
He notably scored from the penalty spot during Atletico's 3-1 Champions League semi-final victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Costa began his European career with Portuguese club Sporting Braga and initially joined Atletico in 2007.
After loan spells with Celta Vigo and Albacete and a season at Real Valladolid, he returned to Atletico in 2010, spending another period on loan at Rayo Vallecano in early 2012.
His time in Spain enabled him to acquire Spanish nationality and despite having made two friendly appearances for Brazil in March 2013, he decided to commit himself to Spain later that year.
Costa made his Spain debut in a friendly against Italy in March this year, playing for the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory at Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium.
He is expected to lead the line for Spain at the World Cup in Brazil, although he is battling an ongoing hamstring problem that forced him off in the early stages of last month's Champions League final.

Shaw looking to join Man Utd
Southampton left-back Luke Shaw told the club on the final day of last season that he wanted to leave for Manchester United this summer, according to BBC Sport
Shaw has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, who have already seen a £27m bid rejected for the teenager, who is currently in Brazil ahead of the World Cup, which begins on Thursday. Man Utd were initially hoping that Shaw would be signed ahead of the tournament, but that now looks unlikely to be the case.
Southampton, who have already sold fellow England star Rickie Lambert to Liverpool since last season came to an end, value Shaw at around £30m, although they say that they will not take part in any transfer dealings until after a new manager is appointed to replace the departed Mauricio Pchettino.
Man Utd were the visitors to the St. Mary’s Stadium on the final day of last season, and Shaw made his intentions to move to Old Trafford clear to the club’s staff. He has been asked by England to clarify his future quickly, but Southampton will sell if the conditions are right.

Kroos ‘in contact with van Gaal’
According to reports, Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has spoken to new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal over a possible move to Old Trafford, writes the Metro.
Towards the end of May, it was rumoured that van Gaal had decided to end his new club’s interest in Kroos, which had begun while David Moyes was in charge. However, the Dutchman is thought to still retain an interest in the 24-year-old, who scored four goals in 51 appearances last season in all competitions.
Talks over a new contract with Bayern Munich have dragged on, with Kroos looking to earn similar wages to stars such as Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze and new signing Robert Lewandowski. He still has one year remaining on his current deal, and despite Bayern being unwilling to sell, they would prefer a sale now rather than see him leave for nothing at the end of next season.
Kroos has insisted that he will be at Bayern next season, but Man Utd would be ready to step in should he become available, along with another interested party, European champions Real Madrid. The Red Devils will be boosted, however, by the contact between Kroos and current Dutch national team coach van Gaal.

Antonio Valencia signs new three-year Manchester United contract
Antonio Valencia has signed a new three-year contract with Manchester United, the club has announced. The winger, who captained Ecuador to a 2-1 World Cup victory against Honduras on Friday, said he was “looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal”.
United’s assistant manager, Ryan Giggs, said: “I’m really pleased Antonio has signed a new contract. His contribution to the team since he joined the club in 2009 has been fantastic. Antonio is a very powerful player with great speed and versatility. He is very professional in his approach to training and I am delighted he has committed his future to the club.”
Valencia said: “My time at Manchester United has been like a dream come true. To be the first Ecuadorian player to win the English Premier League was a very proud moment for me and for my country.
“I am so happy to have signed a new deal and am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal. There is great team spirit within the club and we are all determined to get back to winning ways.”
Valencia has the option to extend the deal to 2018.

The Germany striker has become frustrated with his lack of starts under new boss Pep Guardiola and he is willing to leave the club in order to secure first team football.
Mueller, 24, is also angry at the fact that when he did start last the season Guardiola has played him out of position.
The German has now put his foot down and says he will no longer play out of position.
Mueller said: "I have now come to the point where I insist to know that I am part of the starting 11 at Bayern Munich."
"I have also demanded to know if the club really want to go forward with me in the next few seasons.
“I am no longer the type who says, ‘OK then, today I will play in this role, next match in that role. Just move me about and I will keep my mouth shut’. No, those days are gone.’’
The news of Mueller's unhappiness would have certainly the caught the eye of new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman will be looking to sign a top class striker to partner Robin van Persie up-front next season and Mueller would certainly fit the bill.
Mueller flourished under van Gaal during the Dutchman's reign at Bayern and the new United chief is widely regarded as the man who transformed the Bavarian star.
Reports in Germany claim van Gaal is keen to bring his former player to Old Trafford and that he is willing to offer the German giants to £25 secure his services.
Although Mueller is keen to leave the club in order to play first team football and it will be difficult for van Gaal to lure him to Old Trafford as the Red Devils won't be playing in the Champions League next season which could be a major stumbling block for any potential deal.
RE: Manchester United to launch £25m bid for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera
Manchester United to launch £25m bid for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera
According to reports in Spain, new United manager Louis Van Gaal has instructed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to launch a £25m bid for the Spanish midfielder.
The offer from United is unusual due to the fact that Herrera's current contract contains a £30m release clause, which will increase to £35m at the end of this month.
It is extremely unlikely that Bilbao will accept United's first offer for Herrera, who has two years remaining on his current deal.
The unwillingness from United to activate Herrera's release clause could see Van Gaal follow former manager David Moyes in missing out on the 24-year-old.
United and Moyes came close to signing Herrera last summer, but pulled out of the deal when Bilbao refused to lower his £30m release clause.
Bilbao want to keep hold of the former Spain U-21 international and will demand that United stump up Herrera's full release clause.
And with his price set to rise to £35m at the end of June, United will face the challenge of attempting to agree a transfer with Bilbao and Herrera before the month is out.
RE: Arsenal ‘to offer Mario Balotelli £180,000-a-week to make Arsenal transfer’
Arsenal ‘to offer Mario Balotelli £180,000-a-week to make Arsenal transfer’
Arsenal are reportedly set to offer Mario Balotelli a deal worth £180,000-a-week to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Balotelli is one of the Gunners’ key transfer targets, as manager Arsene Wenger looks to add a world-class striker to his squad for next season.
The AC Milan forward is open to a switch, and his agent told reporters yesterday that a £27million deal could happen in the coming weeks.
Arsenal are yet to formally make an approach, but reports in Italy say senior officials including negotiator Richard Law have drawn up a potential contract – worth £180,000-a-week.
The deal would see Arsenal share a portion of Balotelli’s lucrative sponsorship rights, which are worth millions in extra income.
He currently earns about £150,000-a-week at Milan, but part of that is bonus related and his representatives are determined to get him a better contract elsewhere.
