Wayne Rooney to miss Manchester United fixtures for rest of the season: Reports

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for the rest of the 2013-14 English Premier League season due to a chipped bone in his toe, according to the Daily Star. This could come as a major blow for embattled manager David Moyes who has failed miserably this season after replacing legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson following his retirement.

The injury is far more serious for Rooney, who recently signed a new 300,000-pound-a-week deal with United, than how it was initially projected by the Old Trafford club.

Although United have only five matches left this season in the Premier League, Moyes would have loved Rooney on board, with the team struggling to book a Europa league spot this year. They were ousted from the Champions League by defending champions Bayern Munich recently, after they put up a spirited show in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford during the first leg. Rooney would also have helped build the necessary momentum for the club in their next season.

However, even as doctors remain hopeful, the big question for English football fans is whether Rooney will be available to play for the Three Lions in the 2014 Brazil World Cup in June.

Everton keeper Tim Howard extends contract until 2018

London: Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep the United States international on Merseyside until 2018, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

Howard, 35, joined Everton on loan from Manchester United in 2006 before signing permanently the following year and has gone on to make 343 appearances in total.

He is expected to start for the U.S. at this year's World Cup in Brazil, having played a major role in Everton's push for a Champions League place by keeping 13 clean sheets in 33 league matches after missing one through suspension.

"To have Tim Howard performing as he has been this season, I cannot see past him to choose the best goalkeeper in the league," manager Roberto Martinez told the club's website.

"For him, in such an important year with the World Cup around the corner, to commit his future for the long term is an incredible moment for the dressing room."

Everton are fifth in the standings with 66 points from 34 games, a point behind Arsenal who occupy the last Champions League qualifying spot with four games left.
