India v England, 4th Test: Injured Ajinkya Rahane out of series, Manish Pandey in
NEW DELHI: India will be without Ajinkya Rahane for the fourth and fifth Test against England, the BCCI has announced, with uncapped Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey called up for the first time to the Test squad. The BCCI also stated that Mumbai pace bowler Shardul Thakur has been added to the squad for the fourth Test in Mumbai as cover for Mohammed Shami, who played through the Mohali match with a sore knee.
In a press release on Wednesday, the BCCI clarified that Rahane had been struck on the right index finger during practice and "sustained an avulsion fracture" and that he would play no further role in the series. The fourth Test starts Thursday at the Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium and the final in Chennai from December 16.
This is the first Test call-up for Pandey, 27, who has played 12 ODIs and six Twenty20 internationals. His most recent outing for Karnataka was in the ongoing Ranji Trophy against Saurashtra, where he scored 75 and 58. Pandey averages 49.28 from 79 first-class matches, with 16 hundreds. Rahane has struggled in three Tests versus England, making 13, 1, 23, 26 and 0 for an average of 12.60 in what has statistically been his poorest returns in a series.
He is currently playing for his state side in Mohali in the ninth round of the Ranji Trophy, and considering the urgency of traveling to Mumbai on short notice it is likely that Pandey's Karnataka team-mate Karun Nair, who made his debut in the third Test, will remain in the middle order. With KL Rahul returning as opener, Parthiv Patel will slot down into the middle order as wicketkeeper-batsman.
Thakur, 25, was part of the Test squad that went to the West Indies earlier this year but has not got a chance to represent India yet. His last Ranji match for Mumbai contained first innings figures of 6/31.
However, India's squad includes Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose last Test match in October produced a match-winning five-wicket haul. Should Shami be ruled out, it is likely that Bhuvneshwar steps in.
