James Anderson's absence could extend until Mumbai Test

England may be without James Anderson for the first three Tests in India as he continues his recovery from the shoulder injury which has hampered him since midway through the English season.

Anderson has not been included in the 16-man squad for the five-Test tour which is unchanged from the group currently in Bangladesh.

Alastair Cook had already said that Anderson would miss the opening Test in Rajkot and a decision over the involvement of him on the tour will be taken in the coming days, but it is understood that the Mumbai Test which begins on December 8 is now seen as his earliest return date.

Speaking after the first Test in Chittagong, England coach Trevor Bayliss gave a positive outlook on Anderson. "The medical staff are very pleased with how he has come on in the last week or so. He has had more scans and is looking good. They haven't given any indication of when he might be available, but definitely out for the first Test in India."

He was described as "the difference between the sides" by India captain MS Dhoni after England won the 2012 Test series between the teams, but it seems increasingly likely that England will have to learn to live without him.
When Anderson spoke to ESPNcricinfo earlier in October, he was confident over his recovery. "I'm not going to miss the entire trip, no," he said. "I'm very confident I'm going to be involved in the India series, it is a frustrating injury, something I want to get right, but it does happen in cricket, in sport, you get injured, you've just got to deal with it, and hopefully I can get as fit as possible as soon as possible."

While there might have been a case for calling up another spin bowler for the India tour - England had two seamers (Steven Finn and Jake Ball) and one spinner (Zafar Ansari) on the side-lines for the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong - the England team management have suggested they are likely to retain faith in a six-man attack involving three seamers and three spinners.

Mark Wood, the Durham fast bowler, who was part of the original squad for Bangladesh remains unavailable having required another ankle operation .

If England do require reinforcements, they have an 18-man Lions squad a short flight away in the UAE.

Saqlain Mushtaq hired as spin consultant for England’s India tour

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as a spin consultant to the national cricket team for its upcoming tour of India.

Saqlain will reach India on November 1 and remain with the English team for 15 days, helping them prepare for a Test series, which is expected to be played on spin friendly pitches. The five-Test series is starting on November 9.

“I have been entrusted the task of helping the English spinners prepare for the series in India where normally pitches help the spinners,” he said.

“I will also be giving tips to the English batsmen on how to counter the Indian spinners on their home pitches. It should be a challenging assignment,” Saqlain added.

The off-spinner toured India in 1999 with the Pakistan team and shone with ball in the Test matches to help his team win in Chennai and Kolkata with a bagful of wickets.

“I am hopeful my advice will be helpful the England players in India,” he said.

Saqlain, who is based in the United Kingdom, said he had no concerns over travelling to India despite the ongoing tensions between the two countries.

“I am not expecting any negative reaction in India to my presence there,” he said.

Saqlain, now a British national, said he didn’t expect any problems in India since he would be part of the touring contingent, which would be given foolproof security in India.

Credited with inventing the “Doosra” delivery, Saqlain has worked as spin consultant with the West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and England teams in the past.

Ironically he has never got a permanent coaching assignment from the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Last year also Saqlain had worked with the England team during its series against Pakistan in the UAE and faced taunts of traitor from some quarters.

Indian team for England series to be announced on Wednesday

Fit-again pacer Ishant Sharma is likely to make a comeback when the national selection committee meets on Wednesday to pick the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against England commencing November 9. “The Indian team is to be picked in Mumbai tomorrow,” BCCI sources said on Tuesday.

Although India trounced New Zealand 3-0 in the previous Test rubber, the selection panel, headed by MSK Prasad, will have quite a few things to consider before naming the team for what would be a five-match rubber.

Injury to opener K L Rahul in the opening Test at Kanpur and the indisposition of Ishant Sharma gave the selectors an opportunity to recall veteran opener Gautam Gambhir and off break bowler Jayant Yadav for the second Test at Kolkata.

Gambhir did not play at Eden Gardens but got a chance to renew his interrupted career after a two-year gap when Shikhar Dhawan suffered a finger injury at Kolkata and was ruled out of the third and final Test at Indore. Karun Nair was included in Dhawan’s place in the squad but did not make the playing eleven. Yadav also did not figure in either Test elevens.

It would be interesting to see whether the selectors repose faith in Gambhir, who made a half century in the Indian second innings at Indore, if Rahul and Dhawan are both passed fit to play. Gambhir also made 147 in Delhi’s last Ranji match against Odisha.

Pace bowler Ishant is expected to be included after recovering from Chikungunya. He was picked for the opening Test against New Zealand at Kanpur but could not play any part in the rubber. He has played 2 Ranji matches, bowling more than 40 overs at good pace.
The rest of the squad, to be led by Virat Kohli, is expected to be retained.

Meanwhile, the visiting England squad is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday from Bangladesh after drawing the two-Test rubber against the hosts.

KL Rahul and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have not played a single match since they got injured and their match fitness is yet to be proved. While Rahul is nursing a hamstring strain, Bhuvneshwar is dealing with an ankle injury and it is unlikely that any of the two would get a chance unless they are able to prove match fitness. Similar is the case of Dhawan, who is nursing a finger injury.

England are not scheduled to play any practice game and will have just one practice session on November 5 at the Cricket Club of India before leaving for the venue of the opening Test, Rajkot, according to BCCI sources. “Currently they are to have just one practice session. If they want more it will be arranged,” the sources informed.

England would depart for Rajkot, ahead of the series opener from November 9-13, either on November 5 evening or the next morning.

The Indian squad is set to assemble in Rajkot, which is to host a first-ever Test, on November 5 evening, BCCI sources added.

The other Tests are slated to be held in Vishakapatnam (Nov 17-21), Mohali (Nov 26-30), Mumbai (Dec 8-12) and Chennai (Dec 16-20).
