Jallikattu wins: Tamil Nadu Governor Vidya Sagar Rao approves Ordinance to remove bull-taming sport ban

Tamil Nadu governor Vidya Sagar Rao has cleared the resolution for holding Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. This will enable the Tamil Nadu government to escape the ban on bull taming sport by the Supreme Court in 2013. The resolution already got the approval of Law and Environment Ministries. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Union government was working in tandem with state government to resolve the issue.

In an earlier development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said that it will bring Ordinance which will enable changes to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Following the approval by the President of India, the Ordinance will be sent to the governor of Tamil Nadu. After the Ordinance is approved by the governor, the Ordinance will come into force.

The Supreme Court agreed to the Centre’s request to delay its final verdict on the bull taming sport of Jallikattu for at least a week. This came after the Centre moved the apex court to take into consideration the situation in Tamil Nadu.

Reflecting on Tamil Nadu government’s decision to bring the Ordinance, eminent jurist Soli Sorabjee had said that emotions should not be over ride the basic principle of rule of law. As per TV reports, he reportedly said “I think the leaders should appeal to the protesters. Emotions cannot override the basic principle of the rule of law, otherwise we are at the mercy of people who just get emotions in to it.”

Celebrities of southern India were also united against the ban. From film stars to sports persons, many have voiced out their support for Jallikattu and the protesters demanding that the ban be lifted. “Bring in whatever rules but Jallikattu must be held to keep up the traditions of our Tamil culture,” said Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.

UberEATS, on-demand food delivery service to launch in India very soon

Uber, the cab-hailing service is all set to launch its on-demand food delivery app, UberEATS, in India. Started as a pilot project in Los Angeles back in 2014, the service has seen a gradual expansion; and is now functional in top cities across the globe. These include Bangkok, San Francisco, Dubai, Cape Town, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore among others. After launching its services in India, UberEATS will be competing with already popular services such as Zomato, Swiggy and Foodpanda, to name a few.

“I am incredibly excited about bringing UberEATS to India. This is a significant investment, it spans multiple cities and regions, and it has the potential to change the food industry – with the push of a button – in one of the most vibrant food cultures in the world,” said Allen Penn, Asia Pacific’s head of UberEATS.

While Uber is currently looking to setup its network of restaurants and delivery partners in India, the app is already available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, after you login and enter the location, you’ll see a message ‘we’re coming soon’ followed by a button ‘Notify Me’ which will give you a notification when the service goes live.

UberEATS uses the same technology as the company’s cab-hailing app. It is cost-effective and efficient, designed to get food delivered to you, as easy as requesting a ride, the company claims. Ahead of its launch, Uber is also asking users for inputs and suggestions by asking to fill up a small form.

In the form, you can choose your city of residence, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai or Kolkata. It is likely that the service could be launched in these cities first. There are also other details that you need to fill up in the form, such as your favorite restaurant name and your name.

Pakistan declines India’s invite to attend Speakers’ Summit

Amidst chill in Indo-Pak ties, Pakistan has declined an invitation by Indian Parliament and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to attend South Asian Speakers’ Summit to be held next month. “Pakistan and Myanmar which were among the countries in the South Asian nations invited to the Speakers’ meet in Indore on February 18-19 have declined the invitation,” official sources said.

However, officials did not elaborate on the reasons given by Pakistan and merely noted that these two countries have written that they will not be able to attend the meet.

The Summit, which is primarily an IPU initiative and not a SAARC activity, will be attended by Speakers of Parliament from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka among other countries, the sources said. Significantly, in 2015, India had boycotted a Commonwealth Parliamentary Union (CPU) meeting in Islamabad to protest against Pakistan’s decision to not invite the Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

The discussions during the Speakers’ Summit on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will update the participants on implementation of the SDGs in their region and globally.

Special emphasis will be laid on sharing experiences and increasing understanding about how parliaments in the region institutionalise the global goals, capture the synergies and build coherence at the policy level, IPU said on its website.
