NEW DELHI: In a first, India and China on Wednesday carried out a joint army exercise in eastern Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, a move that comes amid hectic diplomatic manoeuvring between the two countries over a host of issues like Nuclear Suppliers Group and designation of Masood Azhar as a terrorist by the UN .

During the day long exercise on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) a fictitious situation of earthquake striking an Indian Border village was painted. Thereafter joint teams carried out rescue operations, evacuation and rendering of medical assistance.

India's indigenously developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V was successfully test-fired from Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast at 11.18 a.m. on Monday.

This is the fourth success in a row for the Agni missile series which can take out targets about 5000 km away.

The missile lifted off from a canister mounted on a huge TATRA positioned on Wheeler Island. A gas generator at the bottom of the canister ejected the 17 m-long, three-stage missile weighing 50 tonnes.

Former Home Secretary set to be next Delhi L-G

Former IAS officer Anil Baijal is all set to be appointed as next Lieutenant Governor of Delhi as President Pranab Mukherjee gave his approval on Wednesday.

There was no official communication from the President’s House till Wednesday night but External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj posted a tweet welcoming Mr. Baijal as the Lt. Governor of Delhi.

Mr. Baijal, a 1969 batch IAS officer of U.T cadre, served as Home Secretary under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He is currently associated with the Vivekananda International Foundation.
