YSR Congress Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy was arrested on Sunday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after three days of questioning in the disproportionate assets case. This was confirmed by top CBI officials.
The YSR Congress chief was taken into custody at 7.15 pm. Sources said that the CBI was not convinced with Jagan's replies and needed further clarifications in custody. He will now be produced before a CBI court, where the investigative body will seek police custody for the leader for further interrogations.
Party leader MV Mysoora Reddy said, "It is very unfortunate. It has been done under the pressure of the government. The case, however, is very weak. The Congress fears losing the upcoming by-polls." Party MLC Jupudi Prabhakar Rao said that the leader was bound to get more support now. "Jagan will get more support now. Chandrababu Naidu will not gain anything from this. The people are watching. The Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are doing this. It is unfortunate."
Earlier, Jagan too had alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched by Congress government in collusion with the opposition TDP and the CBI to arrest him.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh two days ago, the young leader also claimed that a conspiracy was also conceived to trigger riots after his arrest and throw the blame on him.
"Important thing is that they want me to be arrested. They are creating a law and order situation against me because it is very clear that the Congress is going out," Jagan said while speaking to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai. He accused the Congress of targeting him in order to postpone the upcoming by-polls.
Sources in fact say that the YSR Congress is likely to do well in the upcoming by-polls. The party is strong in the Rayalaseema region of coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Reddys are allegedly the most prominent community in the state and Jagan, their most popular leader.
While Reddys have been traditional supporters of Congress, after Jagan formed his own party, they backed him. Many feel that action against Jagan is a ploy to scare away his supporters.
The disproportionate assets case
Jagan is accused of conspiring with his father to dole out favours to companies which invested in his businesses in a quid pro quo arrangement. He was questioned by CBI investigators for over seven hours on Friday and over eight hours on Saturday. After the questioning amidst high security, Jagan remained unperturbed and said the questioning was cool and peaceful.
The disproportionate assets case pertains to the Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Ports and Industrial Corridor (VANPIC) deal. The CBI questioned Jagan in the presence of industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad and senior bureaucrat KV Brahamandna Reddy who are already under arrest.
Prasad was the promoter in the VANPIC deal and allegedly invested Rs 850 crore in the business of Jagan for land allotment made to the VANPIC project by the then YSR regime on quid-pro-quo basis. The CBI had on Thursday arrested Andhra Pradesh Excise Minister Mopidevi Venkataramana in connection with the VANPIC project.
Jagan's anticipatory bail petition was rejected on Thursday by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, hours after the CBI arrested Venkataramana.
The High Court as well as the CBI had turned down his pleas seeking exemption from appearing before the agency till June 15 due to his engagement with the by-polls campaign.
