Strategic disinvestment of BSNL or MTNL has been ruled out as there would not be any takers for it considering the current financial stress in the telecom industry.

After shooting down the proposal of the department of telecommunications (DoT) to pump in a massive Rs 74,000 crore to revive the ailing BSNL and MTNL, the finance ministry has suggested that both the sick PSUs be closed down.

Sources said in the event of closure of the two PSUs, the cost won’t be as high as Rs 95,000 crore as argued by the DoT while making a case for a Rs 74,000-crore revival package. The Rs 95,000-crore cost was coming in the case of providing an attra-ctive voluntary retirement sche-me to all 1.65 lakh BSNL empl-oyees and its debt repayment.

Satellite phone services can be kept in government sector and given to BSNL.

Not agree with you ,BSNL ,MTNL are fully responsible for their failure ,they thought they are govt company and govt employees ,this attitude ruin them .they wasted country money heavily .

Actually BSNL have too much gov. employee than it's required. Most of their earnings goes for paying them salary. But Jio and BSNL only two companies which are gaining subscribers. If they reduce workforce atleast 40% then they can still survive. But government don't want to help because they have 3 alternative.
Same as Indian Railways. In here, Government used to pay huge subsidy on tickets. They are making loss. That's why they are now opting for Private Trains, FDI. More job losses in future in these sectors too. Air India already have gone.
