D-Link has launched the acclaimed Boxee Box in India. The Boxee Box had garnered a lot of attention and interest when it was first shown at CES 2010.
The Boxee Box is a multimedia receiver, which connects to the internet using a wired or wireless connection on one side, and to a television using an HDMI cable on the other. In simpler terms, it effectively brings the internet to the television, allowing the user to browse through the online content such as movies, TV shows, music, photos, and even social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, all from the comfort of the couch. Needless to say, this includes high definition content as well.
Designed neatly like an asymmetrical little black glossy box, it comes with a full function remote with a QWERTY keypad. It uses the same technology as has been made popular by the Boxee software, which enables easy access online multimedia content via the PC, Mac, and Linux computers. It also follows a similar content delivery method, now at the click of a remote control. In addition to traditional entertainment, it includes a huge library that spans the Internet, such as university courses, panel discussions, academic lectures, presentations, web-only videos and more from TED, Stanford, FORA.tv, Kid Mango, Next New Networks, and others. Users can also add their own favourite entertainment sources with simple RSS or XML feeds available for most online videos.
The device can also access and play content stored on the hard drive of your computer. It supports most video formats including H.264 (MKV and MOV), DIVX, WMV, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2, and most popular audio and photo formats. Probably the only and the most important factor which could potentially affect its popularity in India is that it comes priced rather steeply at Rs 13,999, which is more expensive than a few netbooks these days. Notwithstanding how good this multimedia receiver performs, with the price conscious market that India is, and with consumers preferring to buy a rather inexpensive HD media player at a fourth of this cost, it remains to be seen how well this product fares.
