BlackBerry’s global market share hits 0%, Apple tops with 17.9% in Q4 2016 : Gartner

BlackBerry, a onetime leader in smartphone market is finally biting the dust. The Canadian smartphone maker’s global market share has landed to zero percent in Q4 2016, according to the latest report from Gartner.

Out of more than 431 million smartphones sold in Q4 2016, just 207,900 were BlackBerry devices running its own operating system. In comparison, a total of 352.7 million phones sold were running on Android that resulted in a market share of 81.7%. In September, BlackBerry announced that it will end all internal hardware development and will outsource it to partners to focus on software development, including security and applications

The second spot was bagged by Apple iOS with while 77 million unit shipped in Q4, making up 17.9% of the market share.

Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled 432 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016, a 7 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2015. Apple surpassed Samsung to become the number one global smartphone maker. It has taken eight quarters for Apple to regain the No. 1 global smartphone vendor ranking.

Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner said,
This is the second consecutive quarter in which Samsung has delivered falling quarterly smartphone sales. Samsung’s smartphone sales declined 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 and its share dropped by 2.9 percentage points year on year. Samsung’s smartphone sales started to drop in the third quarter of 2016, and the decision to discontinue the Galaxy Note 7 slowed down sales of its smartphone portfolio in the fourth quarter.
Huawei and OPPO took third and fourth spot with 9.5% and 6.2% market share respectively.
