Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel will soon charge its customers extra if they make calls on Skype, Line, Viber and other apps using their mobile data packs, the company said on its website.

"All internet/data packs or plans [through which customer can avail discounted rates] shall only be valid for Internet browsing and will exclude VoIP [both incoming/ outgoing]. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) over data connectivity would be charged at standard data rates of 4p/10 KB [3G service] and 10p/10 KB [2G service]," Airtel said.

The company in a statement said: "We have made some revisions in the composition of our data packs, and will offer VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) connectivity through an independent pack that will be launched shortly. Our customers can continue enjoying voice calls over data connectivity by opting for this VoIP pack, or simply use VoIP services on pay-as-you-go basis.

Airtel will have you paying extra for using Skype, Viber and more

Airtel which is one of the largest network operators, in India will be charging you for making calls over the internet whether free or paid. The latest revelation means that the service provider will be levying a fee for using VoIP on its 2G or 3G network as the data consumption for such services won’t be counted as part of any existing internet pack.

This has been mentioned in the terms and conditions page on the official Airtel website detailing 3G tariff plans in the country and was spotted by Telecom Talk. If you head over to the last entry, you’ll see it clearly stating that only web browsing will be covered under internet packs and not VoIP.

Airtel’s T&Cs also mention that customers will be charged for both incoming and outgoing calls placed over the internet. The fee in place will be the standard 4p per 10KB on 3G and 10p per 10KB on 2G. This basically means that if you use popular services such as Skype, Viber, Line or similar others for calling friends, your data consumption won’t be reduced from your monthly allowance and you’ll be charged separately.

Airtel has released a statement which confirms the new revisions and it notes that a specific data pack for VoIP will be offered soon for those who don’t want to be charged separately. Traditional messaging has been on a major decline due to messenger apps and with many services offering free voice calls, this could lead to major losses as operators would be nothing more than data providers.

On the upside, Airtel says there’s a cooling off period of 6 months before existing users will be charged for internet calling. There’s a high possibility that other service providers will also follow the same route. But with all this talk about net neutrality, we highly doubt customers are going to take these changes lightly. We’ll have to wait and see what India’s telecom authorities have to say about the new VoIP policy.

I think if this trend continues then in near future we have to pay extra to watch even a single youtube video also :(

That means we need seperate packs to watch youtube, doing facebook or tweet i.e. seperate date packs for all websites. :s

Its a move to save the business. When whatsapp was launched nobody thought it would be a threat to telcos business but it killed the SMS revenues. Now with introduction of voice calls on whatsapp there is a threat that it will kill the voice revenues for the operators. 80% of the revenues of telcos comes from voice calls. Just imagine the impact it can cause since whatsapp is very popular. Its a move to save telecom business, no telco wants to act as a dumb pipe after investing billions in infrastructure building.

You didnt get my point. The move is not to save internet revenues which is just 10% of the total revenues. The move is to protect the 80% of their total revenues which they get from voice calls.

Imagine u start making calls using voip your data usage will hardly increase but u ll save on call rates. So now when a company gets 5000 crores revenue will only get 1000 crores or say 2000 crores. I hope you got the point
