Cummins, Ponting lead Aussies to rain-hit triumph

Teenage debutant Pat Cummins had his first ball hit for six but then struck two vital blows as Australia eased to victory in a rain-hit first one-day international against South Africa at SuperSport Park today.

Facing an adjusted target of 223 off 29 overs, South Africa's chances took a huge dive when Cummins dismissed Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy in the space of three balls.

The hosts were bowled out for 129 in 22 overs to give Australia a 93-win Duckworth/Lewis win.

Cummins, at 18 the youngest player to represent Australia in a one-day international, confirmed the promise he showed in two Twenty20 internationals against the same opponents. He was it over extra cover for six by South African captain Hashim Amla but then produced a fast delivery which Kallis edged into his stumps to end a 36-run second wicket stand with Amla.

2nd ODI: Kallis, Morkel lead South Africa to victory

PORT ELIZABETH: Jacques Kallis and Morne Morkel stood out as South Africa scored a convincing 80-run win in the second one-day international against Australia at St George's Park on Sunday.

The win levelled the three-match series at one-all.

Kallis hit 76 in a South African total of 303 for six and Morkel bowled with pace and accuracy to take four for 22 as Australia were bowled out for 223 in reply.

Kallis became the third batsman, after India's Sachin Tendulkar and Australia's Ricky Ponting, to reach fifty on 100 occasions in one-day internationals.

He has turned 17 of those efforts into centuries.

South Africa made a bad start when captain Hashim Amla was out off the first ball of the match, pushing a simple catch back to opening bowler Doug Bollinger.

Shaun Marsh likely to play deciding ODI

Australia hope to have both their regular opening batsmen, Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh, back for the deciding ODI against South Africa on Friday in Durban. Both batted during Wednesday's nets session and Marsh appeared particularly at ease, having fully recovered from his shoulder injury. He regularly sent the ball sailing onto the roof of the academy that borders the nets.

"For his first hit in a little while, he looked in good touch," Michael Hussey said. "We are hoping for both of them [to be ready]. If they are both fit it will give the captain, the coach and the selectors something to think about."

David Warner proved his worth with a gritty 74 as wickets fell around him in Port Elizabeth, and if Watson as well as Marsh is fit to play, Australia will have to make a tough decision about who will open the batting. Watson is trying to bounce back from back spasms, which resulted in him leaving the field after three overs and five balls during Sunday's defeat. He came out to bat later on, but has not bowled since. "Hopefully he will bowl tomorrow," Hussey said.

Hussey believes Marsh's inclusion will be a boost for Australia because of the maturity he has displayed over the past few years. "He's brought a bit more consistency into his game, he knows it better than he did four or five years ago when there were doubts over his consistency," Hussey said. "He plays very well to his strengths and he is a guy that can change the game very quickly. He can score extremely quickly and put a lot of pressure [on bowlers]."
