CSA can't find sponsors for Australia Twenty20s

6q6Ot.jpg

Cricket South Africa have not been able to secure a sponsor for the Twenty20 series against Australia and have given the exclusive title rights to a charity organisation instead. In the aftermath of the yet-to-be-resolved bonus scandal, corporates have veered away from associating themselves with the body, and only Castle Lager have remained as backers of the Test and ODI teams. As a result, the T20 team, all international events and two of the three domestic competitions are without sponsors.

Two of CSA's long-time sponsors, Standard Bank and the mobile communications company MTN opted out of their sponsorship agreements with cricket during the off-season. Standard Bank said the move was in line with their cancelling of all sports sponsorships, while MTN declined to give a reason for their withdrawal. Since then, the bonus scandal has dragged into its second year and CSA have been unable to bring any new company on board.

Morkel promises to take up challenge to Warner

South African pace spearhead Morne Morkel has promised to take up his challenge to Australian opener and his Indian Premier League (IPL) teammate David Warner when the team from down under visits the rainbow country.

Australia are to play two Tests and three ODIs in South Africa. Before that the two teams play two Twenty20s, beginning Oct 13 in Cape Town.

Warner is in a red hot form and is fresh from blazing back-to-back centuries in the Champions League tournament in India.

Morkel, who is Warner's teammate in Delhi Daredevils, jokingly dared the Australian to try his switch-hitting against his 150 km deliveries.

"Hopefully, he won't try that against me," Morkel was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald.

"He's played exceptionally well now in the Twenty20 ... I think the most important thing for us is to not stand back and, in a way, fight fire with fire."

"Let's see who can win that battle."

"I think the most important thing (with Warner) is not to be too predictable and always to expect the unexpected things to happen."

Morkel said Warner will find it tough to convert his feats on the sub-continent in Cape Town.

"I think the conditions here are going to be completely different," said Morkel. "Hopefully, we can get the upper hand on that on Thursday."

Australian vice-captain Shane Watson, however, feels Warner has grown in confidence as an international player and sees no reason why he can't repeat his exploits in the two-match T20 series.

"The two innings he played (in Champions League) were as impressive an innings as you can ever see," Watson said.

"To see what he can do against high-quality bowling really right and left handed as well ... he's a very special talent."

"I'm sure the more comfortable he feels around our group and the more he is around our group, the more we're going to see exactly what he can do on the international stage."

Watson guides Australia to T20 win vs SA

Cape Town: Three wickets by debutant Patrick Cummins and a hard-hit half-century by Shane Watson set up Australia for a five-wicket win in the first Twenty20 international against South Africa at Newlands on Thursday.

Fast bowler Cummins, 18, took three wickets in four balls in his last over as South Africa were restricted to 146 for seven in their 20 overs.

Free-scoring Australian opener David Warner was run out for nought off the first ball he faced but Watson (52) and Shaun Marsh (25) put Australia firmly in control during a second-wicket stand of 82 off 53 balls.

Watson survived a straightforward slip chance to Graeme Smith off Morne Morkel when he had two and Australia's total was three for one. Warner had been run out by a direct hit from Morkel at short fine leg in the previous over.

Watson's edge off Morkel ripped through Smith's hands and went for four. He drove the next ball for another four and raced to his fifty off 34 balls with six fours and two sixes.

South Africa's bowlers fought back after Watson and Marsh were dismissed in successive overs, but the tourists were always ahead of the required run rate, even though they only had three balls to spare when Steve Smith hit the winning run.

"We made hard work of it in the end but it's nice to start with a win," said Australian captain Cameron White.

"We were under pressure coming in but it's an exciting team with some new players."

JP Duminy provided the backbone for a stuttering South African effort with a sparkling innings of 67.
