Bengaluru pitch rated 'below average' by ICC match referee

The pitch at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on which the second Test between India and Australia was played on has been rated 'Below Average' by ICC match referee Chris Broad.

Broad had earlier given a 'poor' rating for the Pune pitch on which the first Test was played in the same series. A 'below average' of the wicket will incur no penalties.

The pitch at Bengaluru offered prodigious turn and bounce on the opening day for Australian offspinner Nathan Lyon, who returned career-best figures of 8 for 50 in the first innings. As the game wore on, the bounce became progressively uneven with the match finishing a little after Tea on the fourth day.

The ICC follows a list of guidelines for match referees to follow while rating Test match pitches.

For pitches to be rated 'Below Average' as the one in Bengaluru, the guidelines state:
"Either very little carry and/or bounce and/or more than occasional seam movement, or occasional variable (but not excessive or dangerous) bounce and/or occasional variable carry. If a pitch demonstrates these features, then the pitch can not be rated in a higher category regardless of the amount of turn the pitch displays at any stage of the match."

The only categories lower than 'Below Average' in the ICC's list are 'Poor' and 'Unfit'.

India vs Australia 2017: Virat Kohli, Steve Smith meet ICC match referee Richie Richardson ahead of third Test

ICC match referee Richie Richardson, appointed for the last two Test matches, today met rival captains Virat Kohli and Steve Smith separately to douse the simmering tension ahead of the third Test, starting tomorrow.

ICC’s media release a few days ago that had stated that the match referee will bring both captains together for a chat.

On the day, Richardson, who has replaced Broad as per prior ICC appointment, met Kohli and Smith at the ground which well-informed sources termed as a “routine affair”.

Asked about the ICC diktat, a well-informed BCCI source told PTI: “As per rule, the captains have a meeting with match referee before the start of the series. Both India and Australia had one with Broad before the commencement of the series. Now the rule says that if a match referee is changed then new match referee also meets the captain before starting his assignment.”

Smith in fact spoke to the media after meeting the former West Indies captain.

“I spoke to Richie Richardson and the other umpires just now. Basically they said cricket is the winner in the Test. Both teams turn to play within rules of the game. We always know that a series between Australia and India is fiercely contested.

“It’s between number one and two sides in the world. They understand that, it’s just about playing within the boundaries of the game and making sure that cricket is the winner,” Smith told media persons.
