India-Australia Test series to begin from February 23

The dates for Australia's upcoming tour of India was announced by Cricket Australia (CA) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Friday (October 21). The series will begin on February 23 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

The action will next shift to south of India, with the second game scheduled at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore from March 4. From March 16, the third Test will be played in Ranchi before the picturesque Dharamsala hosts the final game from March 25.

India have a 12-day break before the first Test against Australia begins, after their one-off home Test against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, from February 8. Australia, on the other hand, will have less than a day's gap between their last international fixture and the opening Test of the series. Steven Smith's side will host Sri Lanka in Adelaide on February 22 in a Twenty20 International (T20I).

Currently the likes of David Warner, Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc and Peter Nevill play both Tests and T20Is for Australia, but it remains to be seen if the visitors opt to field a completely fresh set of eleven for the first Test or keep some of the key players out of the T20I.

Sridharan Sriram and Monty Panesar joins Australia team as spin consultant for India tour

Sridharan Sriram, the former Indian One-Day International (ODI) player, has been appointed as a spin consultant for Australia's upcoming daunting tour of India. The 40-year-old, who played eight ODIs from 2000-04, was part of Australia's coaching set-up last year during the T20 WC in India and the tour of Sri Lanka.

Sriram said he was excited to once again work with the Australian team. "As always, I consider it a great honour to be given the opportunity to work with the Australian men's team once again," he said on Tuesday (January 17)."I really look forward to adding value and contributing to a winning cause, against a quality opposition.

"India is regarded as one of the toughest places to tour as a Test playing nation and I am looking forward to the challenge," he added.

Pat Howard, Cricket Australia high performance manager, said Sriram brought continuity in the role. "Sri has worked with us on a number of occasions now all across our pathway system and he is currently in Dubai with our Under-16 team providing his expertise on sub-continental conditions," he said. "He knows our players very well and has a wealth of knowledge on the conditions that our players will face in India."

Sriram will travel to Dubai on January 29 with some of the Australian squad members during the team's training camp ahead of the Indian tour.

Meanwhile, Monty Panesar, the England left-arm spinner, has been roped in as the spin bowling consultant for the tour of India. Panesar, who had a successful 2012-13 tour of the country, picked up 17 wickets and played a crucial role in England's series win.

According to a report on The Australian, Panesar will head to the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane to assist Steve O'Keefe, the left-arm spinner, in his preparations for the India tour. Matt Renshaw, who was recently cleared of concussion, will also be present.

"Having Monty come up is a nice way to kickstart the squad's thinking about playing in India. We want the batsmen to be thinking about what the bowlers will be trying to do to them over there and Monty can engage them that way as well as with the bowlers," Howard told The Australian.

"Phil Jaques will run the sessions with Matt, Monty and SOK, Phil has some nice ideas about how to challenge the batsmen. In Australia we love big turners, but the successful bowlers like [Rangana] Herath and [Ravi] Ashwin are more likely to get you lbw or bowled than any other way, their accuracy and their length is absolutely outstanding," Howard said.

Australia name Test squad for India

Leg-spinner Swepson in line for Test debut, while Marsh brothers, Agar and Maxwell all earn recalls to 16-man squad

Australia have announced a 16-man Test squad for their Qantas Tour of India, with uncapped leg-spinner Mitch Swepson earning a maiden international call-up.
The 23-year-old Queenslander has been named alongside Ashton Agar and Glenn Maxwell to give Australia five different spin options, with incumbent tweakers Nathan Lyon and Stephen O'Keefe also selected.

Squad: Steve Smith ©, David Warner (vc), Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Stephen O'Keefe, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade

Allrounder Mitchell Marsh has also earnt a recall, meaning there was no room in the squad for incumbent No.6 Hilton Cartwright, who made his Test debut at the SCG earlier this month.

Batsman Shaun Marsh returns to the national set-up after breaking a finger during the first Commonwealth Bank Test against South Africa in November and opting to undergo surgery. He's since made returned via the KFC Big Bash League with the Perth Scorchers.

Matthew Wade has been named as the sole specialist wicketkeeper in the squad, with no recall for the man he replaced Peter Nevill in the wake of Australia's innings defeat to South Africa in Hobart in November.

Australia's Qantas Tour of India fixture Tall seamer Jackson Bird, who was replaced by O'Keefe for Australia's most recent Test at the SCG against Pakistan, has been named as just one of three frontline quicks alongside pace spearheads Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
Interim Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns said the panel had considered picking South Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa but settled on Swepson, suggesting he's more of a wicket taking threat.
