Apple Music hits 13 million paying subscribers

During an earnings call marked by a lot of less than stellar news, Apple CEO Tim Cook did manage to locate some bright spots in the company’s ever-expanding portfolio. Among them was a steady increase in paying Apple Music subscribers.

That number has surpassed 13 million, up from the 11 million announced by execs Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi back in February. Of course, the number still pales in comparison to the 800-pound streaming gorilla that is Spotify.

Last month CEO Daniel Ek tweeted that the reigning champ of online music had hit the 30 million mark.

Still, it’s steady growth for the service formerly known as Beats. At least we know that neither Taylor Swift (nor her stunt double) suffered in vain.

Apple Music Reportedly Set to Overtake Spotify in the US

With 36 million paid subscribers, Apple Music is set to overtake its rival Spotify music streaming services in the US with a growth rate of five percent a month versus Spotify's two percent.

"Apple's streaming-music service, introduced in June 2015, has been adding subscribers in the US more rapidly than its older Swedish rival," The Wall Street Journal reported late on Sunday.

Apple Music is expanding its subscription music service to 82 new markets — or nearly all of the countries where the service is available. 79 markets launched today and an additional three markets will go live February 26. Some countries where students memberships — verified by UNiDAYS — are now available include Israel, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal and Taiwan.
