A Bengaluru woman has been apprehended for duping Amazon India and pocketing nearly Rs 70 lakh through her fraudulent dealings with the e-commerce portal. The woman operated using the tried and tested formula of ordering original products through Amazon India and then replacing the delivered products with sub-standard or fake goods before raising a return request.

Deepanwita Ghosh, a native of West Bengal operated from Agara, Bengaluru where she is employed. Taking advantage of the loophole in Amazon India’s return policy for nearly a year, she returned multiple goods purchased from the site after replacing the genuine with fakes. Ghosh usually placed orders for high-end electronics on the portal. She also had a seller’s account under the name of Rajarshi96 on another e-commerce portal on which she sold off the original items, pocketing the amount.

A total of 104 electronic gadgets including high-end smartphones, TVs and cameras were replaced by Ghosh. Her modus operandi had her first list the product on the competitor e-commerce portal and once she received an order for the same, she would place an order for the product on Amazon India, listing the delivery address as that of her buyer. Once the payment from the client was cleared, she would raise a return request with Amazon India.
