MOLOY dear if i am not wrong your make is samsung and your ram is DDR2 400Mhz ram so you can go with any DDR2 RAM with 400Mhz if you want to run 2 ram at one time else your computer will pick smaller one as default.

ram 1 : DDR 2 - 400 Mhz(256MB)
ram 2 : DDR 2 - 650 Mhz(1GB)

computer wil pick
Ram : DDR 2 - 400 Mhz (1 GB + 256 MB)
main problem : you will not earn high frequency benefits.
to earn benefits playing with setting will result in.
Ram : DDR 2 - 650 Mhz(1 GB only)
Error : Old low Frequency ram will stop working.

My experience on this is of 1 year as in past i worked as computer hardware guy on hardware shop so you can 100% trust on this info.

if with just vlc and google chrome if it hangs then it must not be ram as DDR 2 RAM of 1 GB seems ok so it must be that any one of then using hardware acceleration causing your graphics card stops working so i suggest trying turn it off for both as for me on my father's old age laptop i am having good result after same. here are details of same.

hard disk : 80 GB
ram : 1GB
VRAM(graphics card) : 256 MB

google chrome starting causing slow speed so i turned hardware acceleration off on vlc & chrome. since then that in next 7 months there is no slow speed of computer issue.

your mother board also does not have heavy graphic side so not it's 100% indeed looks that when you use hardware acceleration your graphics are causing this errors. on software acceleration software will use ram and then your 1 gb will be ok with 1 tb hard disk for vlc and chrome only experience.

if you are thinking of 1 ram only of 1 gb then yes as long as your computer has ddr 2 slot and you are not trying to reach it's max limit in most case it wil be 8 gb you can use any ram inside it. if you are thinking of 2 ram at one time even with 1gb then i say not preferred as frequency miss match may cause damage to mother board if you play with any setting of it to gain performance.

in most cases yes as you are having direct x 9 only capability in your mother board so as long as you are using windows xp and direct x 10.5 no mother board may give this errors if you are not enforcing to use direct x 10.5. with newer os like windows 7 & 8.1 direct x now is upgraded to 11 & 12 in os so it will cause hang when you use direct x. direct x only work with graphics card and graphics based source. where as in software acceleration software passes data to ram and not graphics card so as long as your ram has space in it for storing data it will never give you any error.

yes it matters as 5600 will have heavy speed of frequency which may not support so i say pick PC2-3200 only

For win 7 32 bit use at least 2 Gb ram(3 will be best), for 64 bit go for 3/4GB.
