Qualcomm announce 2Gbps LTE

The X24 is the first Category 20 LTE modem that can support those kinds of speeds, as well as the first 7nm process chip on the market. At top speed, it’s twice as fast as the company’s previous gigabit LTE modem, and while it’s still unlikely to see those speeds in real life — which is more of a carrier-side problem — improving the technology in devices should still lead to faster speeds overall.

The Snapdragon X24 supports up to seven carrier aggregation (topping things like Samsung’s latest Exynos chipsets, which supported six carrier aggregation) and 4x4 MIMO antenna arrays on up to five aggregated LTE carriers, which allow for a theoretical maximum of 20 concurrent LTE streams. According to Qualcomm, this functionality will allow for X24-equipped devices to connect to the entire range of spectrum bands available to carriers, which would increase overall performance beyond what we have now.

Germany to fight pollution with free public transportation

When the discussion turns to the rising costs of living in many global cities, one factor rarely goes unmentioned: public transport fees. New Yorkers only spend about $116.50 per month on average, compared with up to $200 in London.

Many Germans, however, might soon have to spend a whooping $0.

The country of parental leave, short work weeks and Lederhosen may soon embark on a bold, new experiment: making public transport free. For a start, residents of five middle-sized cities are expected to benefit from the scheme this year, but it could eventually result in the end of bus or subway tickets across the country. The plans are included in a letter the German government sent to European Union officials, and was obtained by a number of news agencies and media outlets.

“We are considering public transport free of charge in order to reduce the number of private cars,” three German government ministers wrote in their recent letter to the E.U., according to AFP. “Effectively fighting air pollution without any further unnecessary delays is of the highest priority for Germany.”

In Germany — a nation where cars drive on autobahns without a speed limit — the move might convince many vehicle owners to take the subway instead, the government hopes.

Finally Intel Turbo Boost comes to Core i3 family

The new Core i3-8130U adds something special: Turbo Boost, a capability that Intel hasn’t added to its mobile Core i3 chips before now. This is a space usually occupied by Core i5 and i7 chips.

Intel launched the Intel Core i3-8130U, a dual-core, four-thread, 15W mobile chip for mainstream laptops and two-in-ones, a member of the mobile Kaby Lake (14nm) family.

On the surface, the specs of the new Core i3-8130U are unimpressive: a 2.2,GHz base frequency, UHD 620 graphics, and 2,133 MHz (LPDDR3) or 2,400 MHz (DDR4) memory support. But the new boost frequency also kicks up the chip’s potential top speed to 3.4GHz, which makes the 8130U the fastest mobile Core i3 Intel offers.

The Core i3 family typically represents the least of Intel’s offerings. But with Turbo Boost, Intel’s Core i3 leaps up into more rarefied territory.
