Indian all-rounder and cancer survivor, Yuvraj Singh has been shortlisted to be conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award on Sunday, i.e. Republic Day, reported the Indian Express.

Yuvraj Singh’s greatest acheivement on-field remains his Man-of-the-series performance during the ICC World Cup 2011. His battle and survival against cancer is also an inspirational tale, as the talented southpaw came back from his battle against cancer to play international cricket again.

It was announced on Saturday afternoon that the Indian cricketer would be bestowed with the prestigious civilian award. 125 other personalities from various walks of life will be conferred with the Padma awards.

The other sportsmen featuring in the list are 22-year-old Dipika Pallikal (squash) and tennis ace Leander Paes.

Scientist R A Mashelkar, nominated for the coveted Padma Vibhushan award also features in the list of 126 people. Renowned actor, Kamal Hassan will be conferred with the Paddma Bhushan award.

Other awardees include Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal and poet Ashok Chakradhar. Late Justice J S Verma, who headed the committee that recommended landmark changes to India’s anti-rape law following the Delhi bus gangrape and murder, is also being given the award posthumously along with rationalist and author Narendra Achyut Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune in August 2013.

The names were shortlisted by a committee headed by the home secretary from recommendations sent by state governments and important personalities. The India’s highest civilian honours are given in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri – and they are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
