New experimental feature on YouTube.

Bigger previews while seeking

We've enlarged the preview thumbnail that you see when moving forward or back in a video. This makes it easier to find the exact moment in the video that you want to watch.

Starting today, if you have YouTube watch history off and have no significant prior watch history, features that require watch history to provide video recommendations will be disabled – like your YouTube home feed. This means that starting today, your home feed may look a lot different: you’ll be able to see the search bar and the left-hand guide menu, with no feed of recommended videos thus allowing you to more easily search, browse subscribed channels and explore Topic tabs instead.

[August 22, 2023] Testing more search by song capabilities on Android: We’re experimenting with the ability for folks to search for a song on YouTube by humming or recording a song that’s currently being played. If you’re in the experiment, you can toggle from YouTube voice search to the new song search feature, and hum or record the song you’re searching for for 3+ seconds in order for the song to be identified. Once the song is identified, you’ll be sent to relevant official music content, user- generated videos, and/or Shorts featuring the searched song in the YouTube app. This experiment is rolling out to a small percentage of people across the globe who watch YouTube on Android devices.

The Google-owned company said that the new conditions to be qualified for the partner program are:
  • Having 500 subscribers;

  • and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Previously, the conditions included:
  • Having at least 1,000 subscribers;
  • and either 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

YouTube for Android is gradually picking up rounded corners for videos

  1. YouTube is introducing rounded corners to its Android app, following a recent redesign on the desktop version, despite mixed feedback from users.
  2. The rounded corners apply to both video thumbnails and the video player itself, but not when the video is in full screen.
  3. YouTube has recently courted controversy for its aggressive campaign against adblockers, including making the Skip Ads button harder to notice and restricting video playback for adblock users.
