Twitter's New Redesign Explored

Twitter-logo-179.jpg

Twitter began to roll out a new interface on Thursday that the company promises will simplify the site and make the web design more consistent with the company’s popular mobile apps. We’ve seen the company testing new Twitter features for a month or so now, and the redesign is finally here. What's new in Twitter’s latest version and when should you expect to see it in your browser?

The New Twitter
Twitter has redesigned almost every section of Twitter with the new update. The traditional Home page has been updated to automatically provide a wealth of new information. In addition to the usual scroll of new tweets, the page now automatically shows you your user information in an easy-to-read format. Rather than popping out to the side when you expand a tweet to see a linked photo or video, tweets now push down the rest of the scroll so no information gets covered up.

The site has also radically redesigned your Twitter profile page as the Me Page. The Me Page is no longer just the place where you update your personal information. It now also acts as a storing house for your direct messages.

Finally, Twitter has added a new Connect page that make it easier to find new users using the company’s @username formula, as well as a new Discover page that makes it simple to find new topics of interest by following new hashtag topics like #twitterredesign.

Twitter is also updating its mobile website and mobile apps to conform to the new redesign, bringing the Twitter website and its mobile interface in line for the first time. This should make it a lot easier for users getting started with the service to figure out how to use it when they’re on the go.

Here's Twitter's explanation of the changes:

When Will You See It?
Twitter first started rolling out its last redesign in September of 2010. For that release, users got the option to switch to the new Twitter design in a few weeks with a mandatory switch to the new layout following after a few months.

The new redesign seems to be following that formula to the letter, but if you want to take a peek at what you can expect right now, point your browser to Twitter’s mobile site, which already sports the new interface. Or you can check out the company’s new page that explains all the features in the new Twitter design.

This is the old problem with twitter. Don't know why they don't fix it.

Twitter Acquires Social Media Feed Condenser Summify

TwitterSummify-179.jpg

Twitter has acquired Summify, a startup that summarizes content in people's Google, Facebook and Twitter social media feeds and delivers a daily digest via email, on a website or to a user's iPhone.

"Our long-term vision at Summify has always been to connect people with the most relevant news for them, in the most time efficient manner. As hundreds of millions of people worldwide are signing up and consuming Twitter, we realized it's the best platform to execute our vision at a truly global scale," Summify said in a blog post.

As a result of the Twitter acquisition, Summify has stopped accepting new account sign-ups and eliminated several features. It will eventually shut down its service completely.

The blog post doesn't say how Twitter plans to integrate Summify into its microblogging service, but the disproportional "noise-to-signal ratio" is a well-known and common problem for Twitter users, who struggle to manage their feeds so that interesting tweets don't get lost among the irrelevant ones.

Thus, it's very likely that Twitter will use the Summify technology to provide functionality that helps users with this issue, perhaps by receiving summary digests of their feeds that focus on valuable content while filtering out the rest.

Twitter Can Now Block Tweets In Specific Countries

Twitter can now remove tweets from users' feeds in specific countries while keeping them visible elsewhere, according to a post on the company's blog on Thursday.

The San Francisco-based microblogging giant said it made the change in an effort to comply with local limits on expression in some foreign countries.

Twitter has been used to spread messages of dissent and organize government opponents in several countries in recent years. The Chinese government has blocked Twitter, and at the height of protests that eventually brought down Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak last January, Egypt also blocked the service.

Twitter has defended its role in helping protesters in the Middle East and other regions organize themselves and spread unauthorized messages within and beyond their countries. But it now has the ability to comply with local standards by blocking tweets from users just in the country in which they are banned. Those messages would be visible to Twitter users elsewhere in the world.

If Twitter does remove a tweet, users in the country in which it was removed will see a grayed-out tweet in their timeline that says a message from an identified user has been withheld.

This is what you'll see if a Tweet is censored in your country, Twitter says.

Through an expanded partnership with Chilling Effects, a project that tracks constraints on online content, the company also will publish requests to withhold content.

"As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression," the blog said. "Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content."

The company said it hasn't used the new capability yet.

"We try to keep content up whenever and wherever we can, and we will be transparent with users when we can't," the blog said.
