Pakistan blocks Twitter over offensive content

Twitter faced the Pakistan government's ire for almost eight hours on Sunday, after the social networking website refused to remove tweets which were considered offensive to Islam.

Users in Pakistan were not able to access the website after it was blocked by the government for not removing the offensive content.

The country’s government had found tweets promoting a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam's Prophet Muhammad offensive to Islam and had asked Twitter to remove them.

Mohammad Yaseen, Chairman, Pakistan Telecommunication's Authority said that Pakistan's Ministry of Information Technology had ordered the telecommunications authority to block Twitter following its refusal to remove the offending tweets.

Access to the website was restored almost eight hours later but it is not clear what led to the decision.

Twitter spokesman Gabriel Stricker said that the company did not take down any tweets or made any changes before Pakistan restored access to the site.

Earlier in 2010, Facebook was also banned in the country over a similar competition. The ban was lifted two weeks later after Facebook agreed to block the concerned page in Pakistan.

RE: Twitter | New bird trademark

Twitter unveils new bird trademark

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter unveiled a new "Twitterbird" Wednesday which will be the new trademark symbol for the fast-growing company.

"Over the past six years, the world has become familiar with a little blue bird. The bird is everywhere, constantly associated with Twitter the service, and Twitter the company," said creative director Doug Bowman.

"Starting today you'll begin to notice a simplified Twitter bird. From now on, this bird will be the universally recognizable symbol of Twitter... There's no longer a need for text, bubbled typefaces, or a lowercase 't' to represent Twitter."

The new bird "grows out of love for ornithology, design within creative constraints, and simple geometry," Bowman said.

"This bird is crafted purely from three sets of overlapping circles -- similar to how your networks, interests and ideas connect and intersect with peers and friends. Whether soaring high above the earth to take in a broad view, or flocking with other birds to achieve a common purpose, a bird in flight is the ultimate representation of freedom, hope and limitless possibility."

Twitter, which allows its members to post brief comments, links or pictures, claims to have more than 140 million active users, with the largest number being in the United States.

A recent survey found one out of seven Americans who go online use Twitter and eight per cent do it every day.

Twitter generates more advertising revenue from mobile than website

Telecom Lead America: Social networking major Twitter has generated more advertising revenue from its mobile platform than from its website.

Facebook, its competitor in the social Internet arena, faces intense pressure to improve its business performance on mobile.

Twitter CEO d*ck Costolo said Twitter is making progress in squeezing ad dollars out of the growing number of smartphone and tablet users worldwide.

"We're borne of mobile. We have an ad platform that already is inherently suited to mobile, even though we launched our platform on the Web and only started running ads on mobile recently," said Costolo in response to a moderator's question about the difference between Facebook and Twitter. He was speaking at an event in the U.S.

Twitter has 140 million monthly active users producing 400 million tweets daily.

The company has ramped up its revenue-generating efforts since Costolo assumed the top leadership role in late 2010, according to agency reports.

The company introduced ads into smartphone users' timeline in February. The following month, Twitter released a feature allowing advertisers to send promotional tweets specifically to iPhone and Android users, who comprise 60 percent of all Twitter users, according to the company.

Twitter has closely held its revenue numbers.

Digital media analysis firm eMarketer estimated in January that Twitter's revenues could reach $260 million in 2012 and $540 million in 2014.

Facebook reported $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011.
