Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 News and Updates

In another important decision, the BCCI said it will allow five foreign players in the playing XI with at least one cricketer from an Associate country allowed in the XI. This is a shift from the IPL rule where only four foreign players are allowed. The fifth player, a source from a potential new franchise said, will have to be from an Associate. "The teams will have the option of fielding five foreign players as long as the fifth player is from an Associate nation," a source, in knowledge of the development, said.

The dates for the maiden edition have not been confirmed but they are expected to be from March 4 to 26. In all likelihood, the league will be played in Mumbai with the Brabourne Stadium in South Mumbai and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai being potential venues for the 22 games in the first season. The Wankhede is likely to be kept ready for the IPL, which is likely to start on March 31 or April 1.

The prize money for the league will be INR 10 crore for the players and then for the teams, it will be INR 6 crore for the winning side and INR 3 crore for the runners-up. The third placed team will earn INR 1 crore. The BCCI said, "100 per cent of player prize money is to be distributed amongst the players only."

Over 30 companies have taken the Invitation To Tender (ITT) document to be eligible to bid for a WIPL team and some of them are newcomers to the world of sporting leagues. Chennai-based Shriram Group, Nilgiri Group and AW Katkuri Group are the names who have shown interest along with corporates like APL Apollo and Haldiram, a group of companies producing snacks and sweets.

All the IPL franchises have, of course, taken the ITT and are expected to be in the race to buy the WIPL teams, the auction for which will be held in Mumbai on January 25. An interesting part of the IPL factor in the WIPL is that two owners of the Delhi Capitals team - the GMR Group and JSW Group - could be vying separately. The two groups have taken the ITT separately along with one as Delhi Capitals. The sale of ITT will close in the next 24 hours.

Accordingly, the central revenue share (on 80:20 ratio) will be Rs 28.08 crores for the team finishing first in the league, with other subsequent sides getting Rs 27.20 crores, Rs 26.33 crores, Rs 25.45 crores and Rs 24.57 crores in that order. This share is inclusive of Rs 77 crores income from central sponsorship which the BCCI is yet to announce. The revenue share will increase in the next four years.

About half a dozen franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have formally submitted expression of interest in the Women's IPL but at least three of them have stayed away.

On the day of the technical bids for the WIPL, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, SunRisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore have showed up with bid documents. But a couple of high profile franchises like Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans have decided not to stake a claim for an WIPL team.

Lucknow Super Giants are also believed to have stayed away but there was no immediate confirmation on Punjab Kings, the 10th side. Unconfirmed sources, however, have said the Punjab side too was at the designated venue with the bid papers.

Among business entities that will be part of the financial bids are Adani Group, Capri Global, Haldiram's Group, Torrent Pharma, Apollo Pipes, Amrit Leela Enterprises, Shriram Group and Slingshot 369 Ventures Private Limited.

The BCCI has listed ten Indian cities and the venues in the tender document, which allows a single party to bid for more than one city. There is no base price set, and bids will be accepted for a ten-year period - 2023 to 2032. The ten shortlisted cities and venues are:

Ahmedabad (Narendra Modi Stadium, capacity 112,560)
Kolkata (Eden Gardens, 65,000)
Chennai (MA Chidambaram Stadium, 50,000)
Bengaluru (M Chinnaswamy Stadium, 42,000)
Delhi (Arun Jaitley Stadium, 55,000)
Dharamsala (HPCA stadium, 20,900)
Guwahati (Barsapara Stadium, 38,650)
Indore (Holkar Stadium, 26,900)
Lucknow (AB Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, 48,800) and
Mumbai (Wankhede/DY Patil/Brabourne Stadiums).
