The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is proposing a six-team women's IPL from next year. At a Governing Council (GC) meeting of the Indian Premier League in Mumbai on Friday (March 25), a decision was taken that all efforts will be made to start a six-team annual Twenty20 tournament for women cricketers, with first preference being given for the existing IPL franchises.

The Board is also likely to finalise the dates and the venue for the Women’s T20 Challenge, which is to be conducted in the third week of May.

While earlier Pune was shortlisted as the venue, the IPL Governing Council and the BCCI office bearers are expected to take a final decision on the venue over the next few days. Like the previous years, some of the top overseas cricketers are expected to feature in the tournament, along with the India internationals.

I hope they start off with 8 teams in this .

The board is also debating between two options of selling the IPL teams: Zone wise - North (Dharamsala/Jammu), South (Kochi/Vizag), Central (Indore/Nagpur/Raipur), East (Ranchi/Cuttack), North East (Guwahati) and West (Pune/Rajkot) - with matches held at non-IPL venues) and existing city-wise like with Men's IPL (Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata - with matches held at IPL venues). A final decision on the proposal for venues will be taken by the IPL chairperson and the BCCI office bearers.

Teams could play each other twice in the league stage a la IPL, with the team finishing top of the table qualifying directly for the final. The second and third-placed teams will be playing an Eliminator.

Would be nice if they go zone wise.

"It will be a challenge to play the WIPL in the home and away format, because with five to six teams it is not possible to have a match every day," the BCCI said in its paper on the WIPL, which was sent to the states as part of the wider agenda for the board's annual general meeting scheduled in Mumbai on October 18. "It is suggested that the tournament can be played in caravan style, where after finishing ten matches at one venue, the next ten matches to be played at the next venue. Therefore, ten matches each to be played across two venues in the 2023 WIPL season, ten each in the next two venues in the 2024 season, and for the 2025 season ten matches in the remaining one venue and the remaining ten in one of the venues from 2023 season."
