Windows 10 Insider Build 14931 will let users send SMS via Skype, and more

Microsoft has recently announced the Windows 10 Preview Build 14931 for Windows Insiders for PC. The update is now live for download for users in the Windows Insider programme. It brings fewer new updates, but brings in a lot of app updates.

Some notable updates that come with the update include dark mode, settings page for Feedback Hub and feedback author in feedback details. It is now possible to send ‘SMS’ via Skype preview if the app is selected as the default messaging app. It will also be possible to send MMS through Skype.

There is now native support for USB Audio 2.0 devices with an inbox class driver. Windows 10 Maps app with its updated version (5.1609.2580.0+) now allows traffic info to be checked at any time by users. The updated Maps app also allows users to set a light or dark mode for the app, and also allows the user to change themes.

Fixes with the new build include addressing the issue that caused some users to experience a black screen when signing out and switching to a different user account. The new build has also fixed the issue of built-in apps like Alarms & Clock, Voice Recorder and Calculator not working properly in the previously build.

“We are continuing to investigate two issues that came up with last week’s flight of Build 14926 for Mobile. After upgrading to Build 14926, some Insiders reported that the pin pad is no longer visible to unlock their phone even after rebooting the phone and some phones lost the ability to use their SIM card. In both cases, a hard reset of resolves the issue,” the Windows team said in a blog post.

Windows 10 now running on 400 million computers: Microsoft

Microsoft has announced its desktop operating system Windows 10 is now running on 400 million active devices. Speaking at MS Ignite, Yusuf Mehdi said, “Windows 10 now has 400 million monthly active devices. The adoption has been 150 per cent faster than Windows 7.”

Back in May, Microsoft had announced Windows 10 having 300 million active devices. Microsoft says active devices mean all devices that have been active in the last 28 days, The Windows 10 figure primarily includes PCs, tablets, smartphones, HoloLens, Surface Hubs and also Xbox One consoles.

Microsoft Windows 10 was launched in July 2015 as a unified operating system for all devices. For the first time, Microsoft decided to make Windows 10 available to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users as a free upgrade. While the free upgrade did steer some adoption, Windows 10 adoption now seems to be going down the hill.

Microsoft had announced its goal to reach 1 billion active devices in by 2018 but recently conceded that it will take longer than 2018 to reach that goal. Microsoft also announced Windows 10 Insider Preview users will get a new build with new security features for Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft Edge browser will get new container-based isolation technology codenamed Barcelona. The feature will use virtualisation-based security generally found in the enterprise servers to detect and isolate malicious code in containers.

Microsoft Windows, the most commonly used operating system in the enterprise sector is yet to see bulk upgrades to Windows 10. Accenture, one of the biggest OneDrive and Skype for Business user, announced it has 1,00,000 devices running Windows 10. Accenture CIO said Windows 7 upgrade started two years after its release while Windows 10 upgrades started on day one.

Windows 10 Now Running on 400 Million Active Devices, Says Microsoft...

Microsoft had set an ambitious goal for itself of having Windows 10 running on 1 billion active devices by FY18 at the launch of its software platform. However, back in July, the company acknowledged that due to lack of traction in its smartphone business, it might take longer to achieve this target. Now, the company officials have reportedly said that Windows 10 is currently running on 400 million active devices.
According to a report by ZDNet, at Microsoft's Ignite conference in Atlanta, company's officials said that Windows 10 was running on 400 million active devices as on September 26. To recall, Microsoft had announced Windows 10 was on 300 million active devices back in May.
It should be noted that "active devices" are only those devices that have been active during last 28 days. The devices included in this figure are not just computers but also tablets, smartphones, Xbox One consoles, and Holo Lens headsets.
The figures arguably cannot be termed as very impressive, as Microsoft offered Windows 10 as a free upgrade for users who were on previous versions of Windows till one year after its launch.
The officials further said that Windows Insider Preview users that are working with early Windows 10 "Redstone 2" builds should soon get a new Edge browser security feature, that is, container-based isolation in the browser. The feature, which was earlier codenamed Barcelona, has now been named 'Windows Defender Application Guard'.
Windows Defender Application Guard will essentially isolate potentially malicious code in containers in order to prevent it from spreading across company networks as per ZDNet report.
