WhatsApp is universally acknowledged as the most popular messaging app in the world. It almost has a billion users, and now it could be getting video calling - a feature that has been integrated in phones like the iPhone and Android devices - but not used often. In fact, Facebook's messenger app also supports video calling and now leaked screenshots point towards the app getting the feature too. The screenshots have been posted by a German website, which point towards the iOS app getting the feature.
The leaked screenshots point towards version 2.12.16.2 getting the update. At the time of writing, the WhatsApp app for the iPhone is on version 2.12.12. Possibly this is a pre-release version of the app, which is being tested by beta-testers and developers.
The screenshots suggest that the user interface of the app will be quite similar to the one WhatsApp uses for the voice calling function. They also suggest that users will be able to mute and switch cameras.
Apart from this, the app is also expected to add multi-tab support inside the user interface of the app, streamlining it and making it easier and faster for users to jump between different conversations with users and groups alike.
Only earlier in the year, WhatsApp added voice calling which has proven to be a very popular feature. The feature is available on the iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry. In the case of voice calling, the feature first came to Android users.
Video calls remains the only perceivable weakness of the app as its competitors - Skype, Google Hangouts and even Apple's FaceTime support video calls.
