While progress on WhatsApp when it comes to adding new features was always a bit slow, its massive user base means that no matter how small an update, it will impact usage for millions. With that said, those who signed up for WhatsApp’s beta program are now seeing a new version, tagged v20.16.80, that reveals an added option for video calling.
The fresh new update available only for users who have signed up to WhatsApp’s beta program shows a changelog with the usual bug fixes, but also the addition of the much-awaited video calling feature. For now it is only the option to make a video call that is available, and the service has not gone live yet.
Tapping to place a usual VoIP WhatsApp call now opens a dialogue box with two options, (Audio call, Video call) instead of simply calling the contact using data connectivity.
The changelog clearly mentions, “You get the option to make video calls, that’s not activated yet but soon would be available for everyone to make video calls.”
As far as the rest of the features go, there is no major visual change apart from the usual bug fixes to this version of the update.
The team at WhatsApp recently updated the company’s web app called WhatApp Web. The document sharing feature will be seen under the attachments icon, along with sharing photos, videos and so on. We could easily share a document, now making WhatsApp for Web even more productive. However, to share documents, both user and recipient should have an updated app.
