I will miss Harbhajan: Rahul Sharma

CpmME.jpg

Rookie spinner Rahul Sharma is over the moon after being picked for the first Test against the West Indies starting in Delhi on November 6. But he will miss his childhood hero Harbhajan Singh, who is currently out of favour.

"I am really excited to be in the Test squad, but will definitely miss Bhajji. Every cricketer in Punjab idolises Harbhajan and I am no different," Sharma told SUNDAY MiD DAY on Saturday.

Sharma, who shot into limelight in the Indian Premier League IV for Pune Warriors, is now looking forward to capitalise on the quality time he has spent in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). "Few years in NCA helped me get a taste of top class cricket and tips from Anilbhai (Kumble) were something I gained there.

Anilbhai is a role model for every young spinner in the country. He taught me a lot of things for which I will remain obliged to him forever," Sharma said.

Win against WI will give boost: Yuvraj Singh

XG11l.jpg

Yuvraj Singh is fit for the upcoming season, after having fractured his index finger in the left hand three months back in England, and believes that a strong performance against the West Indies at home is what is needed before the team departs for a grueling tour of Australia later in the
year.

"The West Indies series is very important for us. If we win it, we can take the confidence to Australia," said the southpaw.

And with Chris Gayle unlikely to feature in the Windies team because of his differences with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Yuvraj feels India will have an added advantage. “If a player like Gayle doesn't come it will definitely give us a major advantage. He has scared all the bowlers in T20 cricket.”

Yuvraj stressed on the fact that the team has players who are capable of dealing with the chin-music that will traditionally await them once the series against Australia starts on Boxing Day. “Most of our stroke players are very good against bounce. Sachin, Laxman, Dravid and Ganguly, when playing, have done well in Australia. Youngsters should emulate them.”

Talking about Rahul Sharma's inclusion in the team, Yuvraj said that it is imperative that the players who have the quality make it to the Indian team.

Ravichandran Ashwin looks forward to Test debut

H6blz.jpg

Ravichandran Ashwin’s strength is his confidence. After a brief struggle to cement his place in the one-day side, the off-spinner finds himself on the verge of a Test debut against West Indies on November 6.

It was the IPL that put Ashwin on the map but what was conveniently forgotten by his detractors was that he had close to 100 first class wickets before he donned the national cap.

No Chris Gayle in West Indies squad for India

2fIjR.jpg

Chris Gayle has yet again been overlooked by the West Indies selectors while picking the squad for the three-Test series against India, starting in New Delhi Nov 6.

The panel Monday decided to retain the 15-member squad currently playing in Bangladesh, with Lendl Simmons returning home to nurse a back injury.

Gayle remains estranged from the West Indies side following his dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) over his comments on a Jamaican radio station in May.

The WICB has demanded an apology from Gayle for his remarks, but the opener refused, wanting to know what he should he apologise for.

Gayle remains an enormously popular figure among West Indies fans, gaining loud cheers from spectators in Guyana, where he led Jamaica to the Clive Lloyd Trophy for winning the Regional Super50 tournament Saturday at the Guyana National Stadium.

West Indies will thus persist with the young pair of teenager Kraigg Brathwaite and left-hander Kieran Powell with Adrian Barath considered fit enough to tour India.

Barath remained with the team, recovering from the hamstring injury that sidelined him during the One-day International series in Bangladesh.
The second Test is in Kolkata and the third in Mumbai followed by a five-match One-day series.

The squad:
Darren Sammy (captain), Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh, Devendra Bishoo, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Shane Shillingford.
