UAE remain in contention for IPL Matches
Dubai: The UAE has once again emerged on the radar along with South Africa as alternate venues for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).
With Indian government expressing their inability to provide security for the oncoming Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the general elections, the Indian cricket board is likely to approach the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for a presentation on the feasibility of hosting IPL matches in the UAE. South Africa, according to the Indian officials, remains a “preferred” venue for them.
When Gulf News contacted David East, the Chief Executive of the ECB as to whether the BCCI has asked them to do a presentation, he said: “We are yet to be contacted to do any presentation. In case they do ask, we are ready and our facilities will be made ready for the event.”
A final decision on the alternate venue will be decided in the IPL Governing Council meeting and then ratified by the BCCI working committee on February 28 in Bhuvneshwar.
The window for the IPL is between April 9 and June 3. Ranjib Biswal, the chairman of the IPL Governing Council has stated that the general elections should be over by May 11, forcing the first stage of the IPL matches to be staged in either of the two countries.
Biswal has confirmed that India will host the last leg including the play-offs. This would mean that the eight franchises will have to play at least 10 of their 14 league matches either in South Africa or the UAE. A final schedule for the IPL would be drawn up once the Indian Election Commission announced the dates of the polls.
The presentation that ECB or South Africa may have to make will be pertaining to cost, stadium and hotel facilities. UAE, with its three world class venues and excellent practice facilities - as well as the close proximity of the venues as well as from India will be more cost-effective for the IPL organisers.
If the matches are held in the UAE, the television broadcast timings for the Indian fans will also be favourable. South Africa, on the other hand, has more international venues than UAE and also the experience of having successfully staged the IPL in 2009.
