Emojis have come a long way from a simple smiley, wink to expressing every damn thing possible. Google has taken up the usage of emojis up a notch by integrating it with something fun and informative on Twitter. Yes, you can now tweet any emoji you want to Google, and it’ll reply with search results about the emoji tweeted. For example, if you tweet a burger emoji to Google, then it’ll reply with search results of popular burger joints near your location. The results are associated with search results and come with the hashtag #KnowNearby implying that Google wants to encourage local search results.
Doing so is really easy, as you just have to select any emoji you want and tweet it to ‘@Google’. Google will then reply to your emoji in just a minute or two. The replies are what makes this entire thing so exciting and fun. No, they don’t just tweet the search results and end it there. These are accompanied with creative GIFs as well. We went ahead and tweeted a cat, and the reply was for cat shelters but with a cute little GIF of cats against the Google search background. Same was the dog emoji, with a GIF full of dogs and search result for dog shelters. Google did get a little too excited and went crazy when the dog emoji was tweeted, as it replied with the same results seven times. To have some fun, we tweeted the ‘poop’ emoji and Google, being quirky replied with search results for flower shops and the caption read, “Need a breath of fresh air?”
We didn’t stop there. We tweeted the pistol emoji, which Google replied with the ‘detective’ emoji and a message, “Care to search for something else? Try a food emoji.” So Google isn’t so crazy after all. We still didn’t stop there. Tweeting the beer emoji, Google replied with search results for restaurants with happy hours. And yes, a GIF full of beer. Something funny that popped up was when the peach fruit emoji was tweeted to Google. So for Google, peach is not a fruit, it’s an expression for bootylicious. Yes, the search result was for the lyrics of the song ‘Bootylicious’ by Destiny’s Child. And the caption read, “Can you handle this?” This is by far one of the coolest little tricks Google has pulled up its sleeve.
For this thing to work, location settings on your smartphone and Twitter need to be activated as the results come from one’s location. According to Mashable, Google will respond to over 200 different emojis from the 1,400 unicode symbols available. The 200 different emojis available range from food, sites and activities as well. Google has also promised “easter eggs” which we’ve already come across. Google began this emoji search back in May, where you could just enter an emoji on Google search and it would show you results instead of the disappointing “no results found”.
