Those who reach the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station can now easily access the internet on their smartphones or laptops as the high-speed Wi-Fi service, equipped to improve passenger facilities, was dedicated to public on Friday. MP Shashi Tharoor inaugurated the facility in the presence of divisional railway manager (DRM) Prakash Bhutani and Rail Tel AGM G Subramanian.
The facility has been commissioned by Rail Tel, the in-house service provider of railways, in association with Google to provide high-speed Wi-Fi at 100 A1 and A category railway stations in India. Central station has become the third station in the state to go Wi-Fi after Ernakulam and Thrissur.

Tharoor said that the new facility will take city station one step closer to world class standard. "Internet is a must these days and this facility will offer connectivity at its best. It will provide better services to around 40,000 passengers who pass through here daily. I have checked the speed in my phone and it is working very well," he said.

Prakash Bhutani said that seamless connectivity will be available round the clock. "Around 35 access switches are there to maintain the speed of 20Mbps. At present users can avail unlimited connectivity for free but within a few weeks the free usage will be restricted to a maximum of 30 minutes and they will have to pay via credit or debit card for further access," he said.

The commuters can access Wi-Fi services through their smartphones by selecting the Rail Wire network from the device's Wi-Fi settings. After that they will have to open their mobile browser to log on to railware.co.in. Then the users will be asked to enter their mobile number in the login space. Once done press RECEIVE SMS to get a four-digit one-time code via SMS. The code should be entered in the WI-FI login screen and press DONE. Then a checkmark will be shown as confirmation of connection to fast, free Wi-Fi.

Though the railways had a bitter experience in Patna where the majority of users accessed p**n sites using Wi-Fi at railway station, there is no immediate plan here to block p**n sites. "People can access any websites they like as we have not blocked any particular sites as of now. But if a Patna-like situation comes up decisions will be taken to stop access to such sites," saud G Subramaniam.
